Dayna Finch
- Title:
- Assistant Coach
Dayna Finch is in her second season on staff at her alma mater. The 2004 Creighton graduate made an immediate impact with the Bluejays last year, helping lead them within one game of the NCAA Tournament.
“Dayna is determined to make this program the best we can make it,” said head coach Jim Flanery. “She has an uncommon enthusiasm for both this profession and for Creighton’s place in college basketball. Players really enjoy Dayna’s passion on the court and her ability to keep things light off the court. She works really hard and is very talented in many areas of coaching.”
Her work with the backcourt was rewarded with a duo of guards earning all-Missouri Valley Conference honors last year. Chevelle Herring was tabbed second-team all-MVC, while Kelsey Woodard was an honorable-mention selection after leading the league and ranking among NCAA leaders with 88 three-pointers.
Prior to her return to Omaha, she spent two years as an assistant at Northern Colorado. After finishing her playing career, Finch spent two seasons on the Nebraska bench as a graduate assistant under former Bluejay head coach Connie Yori. Finch, who played for two seasons under Flanery, played her first two seasons for Yori at Creighton.
Finch, one of the top perimeter threats in school and MVC history, owns The Valley record with 294 career three-point field goals made and the Creighton record with 766 career three-point attempts. She ranks second in CU history in three-point field goals made and second in Valley history in attempts from beyond the arc. She ranks sixth at Creighton in games played (121), ninth in three-point field goal percentage (.384), 10th in steals (182) and 13th with 1,260 career points.
The guard was part of three postseason teams at Creighton, including the last Bluejay team to reach the NCAA Tournament, the 2002 MVC regular-season and tournament champions. The Jays reached the WNIT Final Four in 2003 and captured the postseason WNIT Championship in 2004, as Finch led the team with 17 points per game during its WNIT run. As a senior, she was tabbed to the WNIT All-Tournament Team and honorable-mention all-MVC, as she topped the team with 13.9 points per game on the year.
Her 3.1 three-pointers per game as a senior ranked seventh in the NCAA and her 2.9 treys per game as a sophomore ranked 10th in the nation. Not just a sharp-shooter, she was a sharp student, twice earning first-team all-MVC scholar-athlete recognition, earning CoSIDA Academic All-District VII First-Team honors and she was named the 2004 MVC Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Finch, a Smith Center, Kan., native, earned her undergraduate degree in psychology from Creighton in 2004 and her master’s degree in leadership education from Nebraska in 2006. She is married to Tim Weltmer, a former football walk-on at the University of Nebraska.
