OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton played to its third scoreless tie of the season in its men's soccer Missouri Valley Conference opener Friday night against Drake in front of 2,267 fans at the Creighton Soccer Field. The Bluejays' offensive struggles continue as they continue to out-shoot opponents, but fail to convert on those chance, playing to a 0-0 tie.
The first half witnessed the Bulldogs (6-2-2, 0-0-1 MVC) out-shoot the Bluejays, 7-4. A team save for Drake in the first half helped keep the Bluejays off the board. Guido Leon made important back-to-back saves to keep DU scoreless in the first 45 minutes. He stopped an initial shot and turned away the rebound late in the first half.
Both teams set the tone for a physical match on the night, with fouls in Drake's favor, 13-11, in the opening half. The match would witness over 50 fouls, as the Dogs were whistled for 29, CU for 24.
Creighton (3-3-3, 0-0-1 MVC) unloaded 14 shots in the second half, including three of which found their way on goal. The Bulldogs attempted only four shots in the second frame, as the CU defense clamped down on DU.
In the first overtime, freshman Andrew Peterson attempted two shots, while the Bulldogs attempted two shots in the second overtime. The Jays avoided two late scares as back-passes nearly found their way into the net for an own goal.
CU has now tied three games in a season for the first time since 1990 and for the second consecutive season opened the MVC slate with a tie against Drake.
The Jays play host to Evansville next Friday night at 7 p.m., at the Creighton Soccer Field. The Creighton Soccer Field is located at the corner of 17th and Cass Streets in downtown Omaha.
