OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton was held without a point for nearly the first six minutes of the game and fell behind by 11 in the first half, but battled back to take a six-point second-half lead, before a veteran Nebraska team came away with a 60-57 women's basketball victory at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Tuesday night. The Bluejays had two attempts at the game-tying three-pointer inside of five seconds to play, but were unable to convert.
Nebraska (9-2) scored the first 11 points of the game before Megan Neuvirth's layup gave the Bluejays their first points of the game 5:53 into the game. The Jays struggled to get anything going on the offensive end in the opening half, getting within five points, down 20-15 with 4:26 to play, but trailing 24-17 at the half. CU made just 6-of-30 shots (25 percent) in the first half, including its first eight attempts from the field and just 1-of-9 three-pointers. The Huskers kept the Jays in the game by committing 12 first-half turnovers.
The Huskers, led by former Bluejay head coach Connie Yori, maintained their lead until 8:10 into the game when Tyrai Bronson banked in a three-pointer to knot the score at 41. A running jumper in the lane by Chevelle Herring with 10:36 left in the game gave the Bluejays their first lead of the game, up 43-41. After Kala Kuhlman tied the game for NU on its next trip down the floor, the Jays scored the next six points, including two Herring layups and a 12 foot jumper by Neuvirth from the baseline.
After CU went up 49-43 with 8:44 to play, NU used a 10-0 run to take back control of the game. The Jays would get within one point twice in the final 5:30, but could not complete the comeback, falling to Nebraska at home for the first time since 1998. Ally Thrall's game-tying three-point attempt with five seconds to play missed everything, was rebounded by Sam Schuett and kicked back to Bronson for a buzzer-beating trifecta attempt that went left off the trim.
The Jays (2-8) had other opportunities to take the game, as they shot a season-low 54.5 percent (6-for-11) at the free-throw line. CU entered the game ranked sixth in the NCAA, making 78.9 percent of their free-throws on the year.
Herring and Thrall each finished with 12 points, the fifth straight game in double figures for the former. Herring also led the team with five assists. Neuvirth led the Jays with a career-best 11 rebounds, while Schuett also grabbed a career-high nine boards. CU out-worked NU on the glass, 39-34, and forced 22 NU turnovers, compared to 16 by the Jays. Neuvirth led all players with three steals.
NU sophomore Kelsey Griffin led her squad with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Bluejays end their non-conference season by playing host to Oral Roberts Thursday night. CU and ORU tip off at the Civic at 7:05 p.m. The game can be heard live on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
