OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton kept its record perfect in the Diadora Challenge, improving to 15-0-4 all-time in the 10th annual event, with a 3-0 win over Yale Sunday afternoon at Morrison Stadium. The win moved the Bluejays' unbeaten streak to six matches and pushed their overall mark on the season to 4-2-2.
Creighton controlled play in a scoreless first half, out-shooting the Bulldogs (2-3-1) by an 8-4 count and earning four corner kicks to Yale's one in the first 45 minutes.
The Bluejays wasted no time in getting on the board in the second half, notching the game's first goal 56 seconds into the second stanza. Tournament MVP Chris Schuler scored his second goal of the season (and second game-winner) when he found the back of the net on a header from Tim Bohnenkamp's corner kick. Schuler, a center back, played stellar defense in the shutout Sunday as well as his job marking all-Pac 10 forward Robbie Findley in CU's draw with Oregon State Friday night.
Bohnenkamp then helped keep CU's second score alive and set up a fantastic goal. The Bluejay attack sent the ball through the middle where Seth Sinovic flicked it with his heal behind him. The ball went wide and appeared to be heading out of bounds when Bohnenkamp hustled in at a ball the Yale defense had given up on, saving it off the line. He touched it to Jeff Thayer who had an easy tap in from just a few yards in front of the net for his second goal of the season in the 50th minute.
Another well played goal in the 58th minute provided the final margin in the dominating victory. Freshman Mo Travis scored his first career goal when he chipped the ball over an out-of-position Erik Geiger in net for Yale. Michael Kraus and Thayer helped set up the tally with precision touch passes.
Matt Allen stopped five Yale shots for his fourth shutout in the last five matches. His sprawling save of a Yale header late in the game kept the Bulldogs off the board and provided the 1,798 fans and live television audience (NET in Nebraska) with the defensive play of the match. Allen was named to the Diadora Challenge All-Tournament Team along with Kraus, Schuler and Pietari Holopainen.
The Bluejays captured their third straight Diadora Challenge tournament title and sixth in 10 years of hosting the event. CU edged Oregon State for the championship, as OSU topped Drake 2-0 in the first match on Sunday. CU took the tie-breaker over the Beavers with a plus-three goals differential, compared to plus-two by OSU.
Fans nationwide can relive the blowout victory when CSTV (College Sports TV) airs the match on Tuesday at 9 p.m. (CST) and Wednesday at 11 a.m. (CST).
Creighton continues its season-long home stand next Saturday when it plays host to Air Force, 7 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.
