OMAHA, Neb. - A dominating performance by the Creighton men's soccer team was not rewarded with a result Saturday night at Morrison Stadium, as Air Force struck for a double-overtime score to snap the Bluejays' six match unbeaten streak and send the Morrison Stadium faithful home in shock following a 1-0 defeat.
Chris Mathews netted his second goal of the season just 31 seconds into the second overtime period, giving the Falcons their first victory of the season (1-6-1).
Despite out-playing Air Force and out-shooting the Falcons 22-7, the Bluejays drop to 4-3-2 on the year. Creighton out-shot Air Force 13-3 in the second half and earned eight corner kicks to Air Force's one in the match. The Falcons did not even attempt a shot in the second half until 27 minutes into play, and they went without a shot attempt for a span of over 46 minutes played. But just one strike swiped a result from the Bluejays.
For the second straight week, Creighton appeared to have a game won, only to be ruled against. With 2:33 remaining in the first overtime, Chris Schuler knocked a header onto goal. The ball appeared to be across the goal line when an Air Force defender cleared it, but no call was made.
The Jays had even more scoring chances than their 22 shots would indicate, but were unable to put a finishing touch on many attacking opportunities. Senior Michael Kraus blasted eight shots to tie a Creighton Morrison Stadium record, but only one shot went on goal.
Brian Guyette stopped five CU shots for Air Force in net.
Four of Creighton's five home matches this season have gone into overtime and six of the Jays' nine matches on the season have gone further than 90 minutes. The record for overtime matches in a season is seven, by the 1990 squad. The loss snapped CU's nine match unbeaten streak at home, dating back to last Oct. 5.
The Bluejays will look to rebound from the loss when they continue their season-long five-match home stand with Central Arkansas Wednesday night. The Jays and Bears will kick off at 7 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.
