OMAHA,
Creighton out-played the Bears (4-9-3, 0-2-2 MVC) throughout the match, including an absolutely dominating second half in which the Bluejays did not allow a second-half shot until the 90th minute, out-shooting MSU 11-1 after halftime.
Thayer capitalized on an MSU miscue in the 84th minute for the game's only score. Senior Tony Schmitz drove the ball along the end line and sent a crossing pass to Seth Sinovic near the top of the 18-yard box to set up the play. Sinovic blasted a shot on goal, which MSU keeper Lance Parker appeared to have collected, but when the ball slipped out of his hands, Thayer was there to put it in the back of the net for his first goal of the year.
“I'm pleased with where this team is, at this point in the season,” said head coach Bob Warming after the match. “I think our passing has just gotten better and better as the season has progressed, creating more and more scoring chances throughout the season and this month specifically.”
The Bluejays concluded the month with an unbeaten mark of 5-0-2, improving to 34-7-6 in October since 2002.
Creighton established a Morrison Stadium record with 15 corner kicks in the match, including 10 during the dominating second stanza.
CU concludes the regular-season 4-1-4 at home. The Bluejays entered the night with the NCAA lead in average attendance at 3,222, and had a solid late-October crowd of 2,275 in the regular-season home finale.
It was the final regular-season contest at Morrison Stadium for six Bluejay seniors; Matt Allen, Tim Bohnenkamp, Colin Campbell, Sam Eid, Danny Minutillo and Tony Schmitz. It marked the third straight season the Bluejays have won 1-0 on Senior Night, and moved Creighton's record to 17-1-0 in regular-season home finales since 1990.
Creighton returns to action next Saturday with a road contest at Drake. The Bulldogs (9-4-3, 2-1-1 MVC) lost 1-0 at Bradley on Saturday night to fall out of a first-place tie with CU. Kickoff in
