
Bluejays Fly by Tigers, 90-57, in Women's Basketball

OMAHA, Neb. ? Freshman Kelsey Woodard led the Bluejays with 14 points as the Creighton women's basketball team cruised to a 90-57 victory over Memphis Monday night at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Creighton (2-1) forced 29 turnovers and logged 15 steals to record 36 points off turnovers in the win.
It was a two-point ball game five minutes into the game after an Aroha Jennings lay-up for the Tigers (0-3) made the score 9-7 in favor of the Jays. Woodard's first basket of the game started a 17-7 Bluejay run that put the Jays ahead 15 with under eight minutes to play in the half. The Jays scored six points in the final 38 seconds of the first half to open up a 44-25 lead at the half.
Creighton forced 19 first-half turnovers and had as many points off turnovers in the opening 20 minutes as the Tigers had total at 25. Woodard scored 11 of her career-best 14 in the first half, including her first career three-pointer.
The closest Memphis would cut into CU's lead in the second half, was a 14 point deficit with 15:15 to go. The Jays led by as many as 38 in the blowout victory.
Every active player on the roster played in the game and scored at least three points. Woodard finished 5-of-10 from the field and 3-for-3 at the free-throw line. Sophomore Kelsey Crites tied her career-high with 11 points off the bench, as the Creighton bench doubled up the Memphis reserves 50-25. Sam Schuett also came off the bench to lead the Jays with eight rebounds in addition to her eight points.
Ally Thrall dished a game-high seven assists and tied her career-high with a game-high four steals. She also had five points and four rebounds, while playing just 22 minutes. Starting center Kristina Voss also had a solid all-around game with nine points, five rebounds, three assists and career-high three blocked shots. Michelle Kaus added 12 points for the Jays in the victory.
CU dominated all the specialty statistics, out-scoring Memphis in the paint 48-18, in points off turnovers 36-7, second chance points 20-10 and fast break points 22-0.
The Jays scored 90 points in regulation for the first time since a 91-64 win over Stephen F. Austin on Nov. 30, 2003. CU last scored 90 when it topped Wichita State 93-83 in overtime on Jan. 7, 2006.
The Bluejays return to action after Thanksgiving when they travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to participate in the Rocky Mountain Invitational hosted by Colorado State. The Jays will face Kent State Friday at 6 p.m. (CST) and will then face either CSU or Navy on Saturday.
