OMAHA, Neb. ? Preseason Missouri Valley Conference favorite Drake forced 22 Creighton turnovers and turned those into 22 points as the Bulldogs handed the Bluejays their first home loss of the year in a 73-51 decision at the Omaha Civic Auditorium Saturday afternoon. The Jays (9-5, 2-1 MVC) shot just 35.7 percent from the field in the game, falling to 0-5 on the season when failing to shoot at least 40 percent.
Jill Martin scored the first basket of the game for Drake (10-4, 3-0 MVC), and the Bulldogs never trailed. Neither team could find their shooting touch in the opening half, as DU led 10-8 nine minutes into the game. The Bulldogs then ran off an 11-2 run to take control of the game. Jordann Plummer swiped one of her game-high five steals and scored at the first-half buzzer to give Drake a 30-22 halftime lead.
The Jays would get no closer the rest of the way, as they made just two of their first 12 shots in the second half, missing nine straight at one point. Meanwhile, the Bulldogs were hot on offense, shooting 62.1 percent in the second half. DU opened the second half on a 12-5 run to push ahead by 15 just five minutes into the half. The Bulldogs would lead by as many as 25 in the second half, dropping the Jays to 5-1 at home this year.
Martin finished with a game-high 17 points and 11 rebounds, as she led four Bulldogs in double figures. Plummer added 15 points to her five steals, while Lindsay Whorton had 13 points and team-best four assists. Monique' Jones chipped in 10 points.
Drake logged 14 steals in the game and out-scored the Bluejays 22-8 in points off turnovers. DU shot 49.1 percent in the game, while turning the ball over just 11 times.
Megan Neuvirth was the only Bluejay to score in double figures, as she led the Jays with 11 points and three assists off the bench. While no Bluejay had more than five rebounds, the Jays out-rebounded Drake 41-30. CU, ranked 11th in the NCAA with 7.7 three-pointers per game entering the contest, was limited to a season-low one trifecta on seven attempts.
Freshman Kellie Nelson added eight points and five rebounds off the bench for CU.
The Bluejays now hit the road after opening the Valley season with three home games. CU plays at Evansville on Thursday night. The Jays and Purple Aces tip at 7 p.m. The game can be heard live on Spirit 88.9 FM and online at www.kvss.com.
