DES MOINES, Iowa -- Elizabeth Woerle scored her league-best seventh goal of the season on a free kick with 3:05 left in the first overtime, as the Drake women's soccer team claimed a 1-0 victory over Creighton on Thursday night in Des Moines.
Drake is now 7-6-3 on the year (2-1-0 MVC), while Creighton lost it second straight match to fall to 9-5-1 (2-2-0 MVC).
"I feel badly for the girls because we dominated the majority of this game," said CU head coach Bruce Erickson. "The slick surface took away from the soccer being played, but we gave away a direct free kick in what was their only chance and they finished and we didn't."
Woerle scored the game's lone goal on a free kick taken near the top of the box that beat CU goalkeeper Alicia Montgomery to the lower left side of the net. Montgomery had entered the match 11th nationally with an MVC-best 0.52 goals against average.
Creighton outshot Drake 12-11, but Bulldog keeper Kourtney Arnold made nine saves to blank the visitors. Creighton's streak of nine straight games with a goal, its longest stretch since the 2001 campaign, came to an end in the match.
Brittney Neumann led CU with four shots on the night. She and Erin Gunther would each place two of those shots on net. Montgomery made four saves on the evening.
Creighton will return home to play on Sunday at Noon when it hosts Southern Utah in its final non-conference contest of the fall.
