OMAHA, Neb. - Penalty kick goals from Emily Orbell and Erin Gunther were more than enough for CU, as the Jays moved to 2-0-0 in MVC play with a 3-0 victory over Missouri State on Saturday afternoon at Morrison Stadium.
"I was most pleased with how we stuck to our game plan," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "We knew where we could attack some space against them and that mentality created both penalty kicks. We were very good in all facets of the game and I was very happy with the performance," added Erickson.
Creighton (9-3-1, 2-0-0 MVC) held a narrow advantage in the shot column at 6-5 after the first half, but controlled nearly the entire second half by out-shooting the Bears (5-5-2, 1-1-0 MVC) 11-4.
The shutout for Creighton was its 9th as a team this year, one off from tying the 1990 squad's program record for 10.
Alicia Montgomery closed in on the individual shutout record with her seventh of the year. She also has a shared shutout with Kaitie Jo Swanson for eight total, and now sits tied for second on the CU single season list.
Orbell put the Jays up 1-0 with a penalty shot goal at 12:34 of the first half. Orbell was hauled down by the back of her jersey in the box and she followed by burying her PK in the lower right corner for the early Jays lead. The tally was Orbell's fifth of the year and first game-winner.
Gunther posted her first goal of the season in the 67th minute on the second Creighton penalty kick of the day. After being taken down in the top right corner of the box, Gunther froze MSU keeper Jessica Teahan on her PK, to put the Jays up 2-0.
"I had an idea where I was going with the kick before I took it," said Gunther. "We work on those a lot in practice and I felt pretty confident taking the shot.
Gunther posted her third point of the match just under nine minutes later. Gunther took a corner in the 76th minute and placed a perfect ball to the middle of the box. Claire Zach, unmarked on the play, headed the ball just inside the backside post for the third Bluejay goal.
"Claire did all the work on that one," said Gunther. "I just got it in the air to the box and she did a great job of finishing," added Gunther.
Saturday's shutout also extended an impressive streak against Missouri State. Creighton has not allowed an MSU goal in Omaha since Oct. 8, 2000, a streak that was extended to 553:19 and six matches.
The win keeps Creighton tied atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings with Evansville, who is also 2-0-0 in the league.
Montgomery improved her record to 8-2-1 on the year by making five saves. Jessica Teahen started in goal for the Bears and made three stops, falling to 5-5-2. Chelsea Voet relieved Teahen at the 72:36 mark and made two saves of her own.
MSU will have a week off before traveling to Evansville next Saturday. Creighton will also be on the road for its next match, as they continue Valley play at Illinois State next Sunday, Oct. 11. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
