NORMAL, Ill. - Brittney Neumann
scored her team-leading sixth goal of the year, but it was too little,
too late as the Creighton women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 match at
Illinois State Sunday afternoon. The Redbirds scored the first two
goals of the match and controlled play in the Missouri Valley
Conference match, as the home team moved to 7-5-1 overall and 2-0-0 in
Valley play. The Bluejays fell to 9-4-1 overall and suffered their
first MVC loss to drop to 2-1-0 in conference action.
The Redbirds out-shot the Bluejays 16-5 in the opening half, but did not convert until their 15th shot of the match. Heather Sterling found the back of the net for ISU in the 40th minute, scoring on a set play from Danielle Mutters' free kick.
ISU held its 1-0 lead at halftime and added to it in the 62nd minute, when another free kick by Mutters set up the goal. Rachel Bostick scored the Redbirds' second goal of the match to build ISU's lead.
Neumann proved to be a force on offense for the Bluejays. While she scored Creighton's only goal, it wasn't for a lack of effort from the Bluejay freshman. All six of Neumann's shots were directed on goal in the loss. She scored her sixth goal of the year in the 73rd minute to cut ISU's lead in half. She put two more shots on goal before the end of the match, but was turned away by one of two team saves on the day for ISU and one of Sasha Reiber's four saves in net for the Redbirds.
"I was disappointed in our performance today," said head coach Bruce Erickson after the road loss. "I give credit to Illinois State, they out-played us in every aspect of the game. We responded, but it wasn't until it was too late."
Alicia Montgomery made five saves in goal for CU, before giving way to Kaitie Jo Swanson in the 67th minute.
Creighton returns to action on Thursday night, when they again hit the road in conference play to battle Drake. The Jays and Bulldogs kickoff in Des Moines at 7 p.m. Thursday.
