OMAHA, Neb. - Kelly Connolly's goal in the 67th minute was all the offense Creighton's women's soccer team would need, as the Jays won their MVC opener with a 1-0 victory over Indiana State, Friday evening at Morrison Stadium.
The Jays (8-2-1, 1-0-0 MVC) controlled the ball for much of the game, out-shooting the Sycamores (2-6-1, 0-1-0 MVC) 26-5 on the evening. After missing out on a handful of solid scoring opportunities in the first half, Connolly found the back of the net early in the second.
"The most important thing was that we got the win," said head coach Bruce Erickson. "We had some early chances, but we weren't sharp and couldn't put them away. Indiana State played hard and were a tough team to break down, but we have to get better," added Erickson.
Connolly corralled a loose ball from 30 yards out in space and fired a high shot towards the net. Her shot sailed just under the crossbar and off the outstretched arms of keeper Emily Lahay for the game's only goal.
The goal was the second of the season for Connolly, and also her second game-winner of the '09 campaign.
Alicia Montgomery made two saves for the Jays, posting her seventh shutout of the year, and the team's eighth. Lahay saved eight shots for the Sycamores, falling to 1-5-1.
It was the eighth team shutout this season for Creighton, and with three more, they will tie the program's single season record of 11, set in 1990.
Indiana State will head to Kansas City on Sunday for their next match with UMKC. Creighton will step out of Valley play on Sunday when they head to Northern Colorado to face Northern Colorado. Kick-off is slated for 1:00 p.m.
