GREELEY, Colo. - The Creighton women's soccer team could not overcome a two-goal deficit, as the Jays fell in a non-conference match to Northern Colorado by a 2-1 count Sunday afternoon at Jackson Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, the Bears (3-3-1) broke through early in the second. Brittani Knott headed a ball past Creighton keeper Kaitie Jo Swanson off a corner kick to put the Bears up 1-0.
Three of the last four goals Creighton has allowed to its opponents have come off corner kicks.
The Bears extended their lead with a Daniell Birdsall tally at 63:41 mark. Birdsall took a pass from Kimmie Fielder that led to a breakaway opportunity. She buried her chance in the left corner for the game-winner.
Creighton came back less than three minutes later to cut the deficit to one. Jordan Bruch posted her first goal of the season with an assist from Brittney Neumann. Bruch beat her defender then smoked a shot into the right corner to beat UNC keeper Heidi Owen.
The goal was Bruch's second of her career and first since her freshman season. With the assist, Neumann moved into the team point lead with 13 (5g/3a).
The Jays made a late charge but narrowly missed tying the match in the 88th minute. Andrea Zuniga had a golden opportunity but hit the post in a last-ditch Bluejay effort to tie the match.
Swanson made her second start in goal for the Jays as she fell to 1-1-0 on the year after making four saves. Owen made three saves for the Bears to move to 1-1-0.
The Bluejays will move back to Valley play on Saturday when they take on Missouri State next Saturday at Morrison Stadium. Match time is slated for 1:30 p.m.
