OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton Men's Tennis team scored arguably its biggest win of the season, as Bryan Lube broke a 3-3 tie at No. 6 singles, leading the Jays to a 4-3 win over defending MVC champions Southern Illinois, Saturday at the Koch Family Tennis Center.
"I liked how we responded after losing the doubles point," said head coach Tom Lilly. "It's always tough in our league to come back after that, but I was really proud of our guys for that," Lilly added
Lube capped off a singles run for the Jays that included wins at No. 4, 5 and 6. His match went to three sets, but he prevailed in the third with a 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 win over Pavlo Buryi.
As mentioned, the dual looked bleak for the Jays after dropping the doubles point with losses at No. 1 and 2. Brandon Florez and Chikara Kidera defeated J.T. Chirstian and Billy Paluch 8-6, and Mpilo Migogo and Falk De Beehhouwer earned an 8-5 win over Ryan Norman and Bryan Lube at No. 2.
Kyle Obermeier and Gabe Nagy salvaged a Creighton win at No. 3, with an 8-5 win over Orhan Spahic and Jordan Snyder, 8-5.
Singles didn't start much better, as Migogo topped Christian at No. 1, 6-2, 6-0, but the Jays would win four of the next five matches.
The run started with a Paluch 6-2, 6-0 victory over Florez at No. 2. After De Beenhouwer topped Nagy at No. 3, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4, the Jays took the last three matches for the W.
Obermeier defeated Kidera, 6-4, 7-5 at No. 4 and James McAvoy posted a 7-5, 6-4 win over Spahic at No. 5 to set up Lube's dual deciding victory.
The dual was the only one of the weekend for the men, as they will be back in action next Saturday at Illinois State for a 1 p.m. match.
