Creighton Men's Tennis Defeats South Dakota State 6-1

OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton men's tennis team evened its record at 2-2 on Saturday, defeating the Jackrabbits of South Dakota State 6-1 in Omaha, Neb. The Jays won two-of-three games in the doubles competition and five-of-six in the singles round.
J.T. Christian and Billy Paluch started the day off right for the Jays, defeating James Thorp and Dominic Rossetto 8-3 in No. 1 doubles. Kyle Obermeier and Sean Mathison defeated Jamie Dash and Carl Lundberg, also by a score of 8-3, in the No. 2 doubles, giving the Jays the automatic point in doubles competition. In the No. 3 doubles, Gabe Nagy and Ryan Norman fell 8-5 to Justin Pyle and Chris Baron.
Creighton then won the No. 1, 2 and 3 singles, when Paluch, Christian and Obermeier defeated each of the respective opponents. In the No. 1 singles, Paluch defeated Play 6-2, 6-2 in straight sets. After falling in the opening set at the No. 2 position, Christian came back to defeat Dash 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Obermeier won the No. 3 position, in one of the fiercest battles of the day, pulling out a 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 win.
"Kyle really just overwhelmed his opponent in the third set," said Creighton head coach Tom Lilly. "That first 6-1 set was about as close as any 6-1 set could be."
South Dakota's only point came in the No. 4 singles, when Thorp defeated Bryan Lube 6-7, 6-3, 6-2. The Jays won the final two points of the match, with Nagy defeating Baron 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 in the No. 5 singles and Norman beating Rossetto 6-1, 6-2 in straight sets in the No. 6 spot.
"The match ended 6-1, but everyone there knew it was a very even match," said Lilly. "South Dakota State has really improved and we were able to battle and pull a win out tonight."
The Jays will be in action again on Tuesday, Feb. 15 when they host Hastings College. It is the second of three straight home matches for the Jays. The match is set to start at 12:30 p.m. from the Hanscom Tennis Center. Check into www.gocreighton.com for all the latest Bluejay information.
