Men's Tennis Falls in First MVC Match

WICHITA, Kan. - The Creighton men's tennis team looked to beat the Wichita State Shockers to earn its first MVC win of the season, but came home from Wichita with a 7-0 loss. It marks the fourth straight season the Jays have fallen to the Shockers, with 7-0 losses in 2008 and 2009, and a 6-1 defeat last season in Omaha.
The Jays challenged in the doubles competition, with each duo winning sets, but couldn't come away with the doubles poing. In No. 1 doubles, Billy Paluch and J.T. Christian were defeated 8-5 by Marinescu and Mihai. The Jays fell in No. 2 doubles in a closer match, with Kyle Obermeier and Bryan Lube losing 8-6 to Cavalcanti and Pereira. To ensure the win of the point, Stiebinger and Nicol of Wichita State defeated Ryan Norman and Gabe Nagy 8-4.
The day didn't get much closer in singles play, with the Jays losing in each match. In No. 1 singles, Vlad Marinescu defeated Creighton's Paluch 6-4, 6-4, while Matheus Pereira defeated Christian in No. 2 singles 6-2, 6-3.
Obermeier was then swept by Obermeier 6-2, 6-2 by Cavalcanti in No. 3 singles, while Bryan Lube fell 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 4 singles. Nagy fell in the No. 5 singles with duplicate 6-4 finishes, and Norman won the only set of the day, coming out with a 6-4, 7-6, 7-4 finish in the No. 6 spot.
The Jays return home after a week break to take on South Dakota State on Saturday, Feb., 12. The match is the first of three straight home matches for the Jays, and is set to start at 7:00 p.m. from the Koch Family Tennis Center.
