Volleyball Ties Home Record In Sweep of Evansville

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball tied a school-record with its eighth straight home win and swept its fourth straight MVC opponent with a 25-15, 25-19, 25-20 sweep over Evansville on Friday night. The Jays never trailed at any point in the contest, the first time its done that in a match since 2008.
Creighton is now 19-3 on the season and 10-1 in the MVC. The Jays remain one-half game behind first-place Northern Iowa (20-6, 11-1 MVC), which swept third-place Wichita State (16-6, 9-3 MVC) on Friday night at Koch Arena.
Kelli Browning led all players with 16 kills, .556 hitting and five blocks on the night to lead the hosts, while Leah McNary added 14 kills.
Creighton dug 86 balls in the match, second-most in program history for a three-set match. The Jays were led by 25 digs from Kate Elman, while Megan Bober had a career-best 19 digs to go with 43 assists. Also in double-figures defensively were Melanie Jereb (15 digs) and Brooke Boggs (12). Creighton finished with 56 kills, two aces, 86 digs and seven blocks on .293 hitting.
Evansville was led by nine kills from Ashley Ring and 23 digs by Katie Klages. The Purple Aces had 35 kills, two aces, 74 digs and one block on .134 hitting.
Creighton had 31 digs and 22 kills in its first set victory. The Jays broke free from a 5-5 tie with a 4-0 run on Bober's serve and never looked back. Thorson had seven kills for CU, while Bober registered 15 assists and nine digs in the set for the Jays.
Creighton cruised to a 25-19 win in the second set. Browning had six more kills, while Elman dug 12 more balls. CU held UE to .068 hitting in the set.
Creighton used an 8-3 run during the third set to move ahead 16-8, then coasted home to pick up the 25-20 triumph. McNary had six kills and Browning added five more for CU, as Creighton hit .306.
CU returns to action on Saturday at 4 pm with a match vs. Southern Illinois (18-5, 8-4 MVC), the lone Valley school to beat CU this season. Fans are encouraged to wear pink as part of a Breast Cancer Awareness campaign.
