Men's Basketball Closes Non-Conference Play With Win Over Coppin State

Creighton will enter BIG EAST play with a 9-4 record
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's basketball team never trailed while closing out non-conference play with a lopsided 102-77 win over Coppin State on Monday. Combined with last Monday's 105-82 win over North Texas, it's the first time since 1966 that the Bluejays have scored 100 or more points in consecutive games.
Creighton (9-4) scored on 24-of-33 first half possessions and did not trail for the fourth straight home game. The Jays shot 68.8 percent in the opening half (22-32), including 5-of-9 from long-range, and had 11 lay-ups or dunks while outscoring Coppin State (2-12) 30-2 in the paint in the first 20 minutes.
Geoffrey Groselle had 12 points and Isaiah Zierden 11 in the first stanza, while Khyri Thomas flirted with a triple-double with eight points, five rebounds and four assists in the first 20 minutes.
All five Creighton starters scored in double-figures for the first time since 210. Malik Albert added a career-high 13 points off the bench., while Zach Hanson chipped in 10. Creighton had seven men score in double-figures for the first time since at least 1980-81.
Groselle made all eight field goal attempts and finished with 16 points and nine rebounds, while Zierden added 16 as well. Thomas finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and six assists. The Bluejays shot 60.7 percent from the field and 52.2 percent from three-point land.
Coppin State was paced by a career-high 22 points from Trevon Seymore, who also led the Eagles with five rebounds. CSU drained a season-best 12 three-pointers and had a season-low nine turnovers in the defeat.
Creighton opens BIG EAST action on Thursday afternoon at 1:15 pm Central when it visits St. John's at Carnesecca Arena in Queens, N.Y.
