
Baseball Splits Double Dip with Utah Valley

OMAHA, Neb. - The Creighton Baseball team split a doubleheader with Utah Valley on Saturday, March 14, taking the first game 4-3 before falling 2-1 in the second contest.
Following Saturday's action the Bluejays are now 8-7 on the season, while the Wolverines moved to 4-14.
GAME 1: Creighton 4, Utah Valley 3
Creighton took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as sophomore Daniel Woodrow reached on an infield single and scored on a sacrifice fly from junior Ryan Fitzgerald.
The Bluejays added a run in the fifth primarily thanks to Woodrow's base running. After reaching on a walk to open the frame, he moved to second via a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Nicky Lopez. The next batter, junior Reagan Fowler, grounded out to third. Woodrow raced for third on the play, drawing a wild throw that allowed him to score.
Utah Valley scored three unearned runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead in the, but the Bluejays responded in their half with two runs themselves. Lopez got the rally started with a four-pitch walk, then Fowler blasted an RBI double to left to tie the game. One out later Fitzgerald launched an RBI double into right-center to give Creighton back the lead, 4-3.
Freshman Ethan DeCaster and sophomore David Gerber worked easy innings in the final two frames to close the door for the Bluejays.
Reliever Nick Highberger (1-0) earned the win, allowing two unearned runs in an inning of work, while Gerber collected his second save of the season.
Game 2: Utah Valley 2, Creighton 1
It was the Wolverines that struck first in the second contest, turning consecutive walks into a run in the top of the first. Utah Valley led 1-0 with no outs and runners at second and third, but Creighton starter freshman Keith Rogalla limited the damage with a strikeout, a ground out and pop up.
Creighton pulled even with a run in the sixth on a walk to sophomore Kevin Connolly, a sacrifice and an RBI single by Woodrow.
Utah Valley, however, took advantage of a Bluejay error to plate an unearned run in the seventh to claim the win.
Creighton left 13 runners on base in the game, including leaving the potential tying run in scoring position in the seventh and the ninth innings.
Reliever Max Ising was the tough luck loser (0-2) in the nightcap, allowing an unearned run on one hit and one walk in two innings of relief.
The two squads will conclude the four-game series on Sunday, March 15 at 1:00 pm.
