CU Men Fall 4-2 to Marquette at BIG EAST Tennis Championship

INDIANAPOLIS – The No. 7 seed Creighton men's tennis team fell 4-2 to No. 2 seed Marquette at the Wynne Tennis Center in a quarterfinal match of the BIG EAST Tennis Championship Presented by New York Life Friday afternoon.
Creighton (12-7) led Marquette (13-9) 1-0 early after taking the doubles point. Senior Elliott Baker and sophomore Jake Norman set the tone with a quick 8-2 decision at No. 1 doubles. Shortly thereafter, MU evened the match with a win on court two. The CU junior tandem of Quinn Dippel and Nick Thompson claimed the team point with a close 8-6 victory at No. 3 doubles.
The Golden Eagles regrouped and jumped out to a 3-1 lead after straight-set singles wins on courts six, one and four.
Freshman Alex Koca pulled Creighton to within one at 3-2 after his three-set win at No. 3 singles. The Bluejay won the first set 6-2 but dropped the second stanza 6-3. Koca claimed a team point with a 6-3 victory in the deciding set.
Marquette claimed a team match point after a three-set win on singles court two.
In the penultimate match of his Creighton career, Baker led late in the deciding set on singles court five but the decision went down unfinished. Baker won the first set at 7-6 after a tight win in a tiebreaker but dropped set two at 6-4. He led the final set 4-1 before it was called.
No. 7 seed Creighton is slated to play a consolation match against No. 3 seed DePaul on Saturday at approximately 10:30 a.m. CT.
