BETHESDA, Md. - Patience and the pitching of freshman Keith Rogalla lifted the Creighton Baseball team to a 4-2 win in the opening game of a doubleheader on Saturday, April 4.
Creighton evened its record in BIG EAST play at 1-1 with the win, moving to 16-9 on the season. Georgetown, meanwhile, fell to 13-13 overall and 1-1 in conference play.
Playing just seven innings in the first of two on Saturday, per BIG EAST rule, the Bluejays got all the runs they would need in the fourth inning.
After the first two hitters of the fourth were retired, junior Brett Murray got things rolling with a single through the right side. Free passes to juniors Ryan Fitzgerald and Harrison Crawford loaded the bases for sophomore Kevin Connolly. The Omaha native blasted a fly ball into right-center where two Hoyas outfielders miscommunicated on the play, causing a collision that allowed all three Bluejay runners to score. The next batter, junior Matt Gandy, sliced an RBI double down the left field line to plate Connolly for Creighton's fourth run.
Bluejay starter, freshman Keith Rogalla, was set from there as the Illinois native held Georgetown without a hit into the fifth. Rogalla limited the Hoyas to two runs on over six innings to move to 2-0 on the season.
In the seventh head coach Ed Servais turned the game over to Creighton closer David Gerber. The result was an easy one-two-three inning for his fifth save of the season.
Georgetown and Creighton are currently playing the rubber game of the series.
