OMAHA, Neb. -- Freshman Erin Scott collected seven saves as the Creighton Women's Soccer team improved to 3-1-0 on the season with a 1-0 victory over Central Michigan on Sunday, Aug. 30.
Central Michigan, which fell 4-3 in double-overtime on Friday at Nebraska, dropped to 0-2-1 on the year.
Scott got a workout early, making two leaping saves in the first four minutes to keep the game scoreless. She soared high to punch away a shot on a breakaway opportunity by Alexis Pelafas in the second minute, then dove to her right two minutes later to save a header from former Bluejay Kaelyn Korte.
After CMU put up seven of the first eight shots in the game, Creighton responded. The Bluejays controlled possession the final 20 minutes of the first half and it finally paid off in the final minute. A free kick from 50 yards out on the long sideline was blasted by Ylenia Sachau into the middle of the box, where it was redirected backwards off the head of CMU defender Christen Chiesa and into the Chippewas goal with 41.6 seconds to play. The score was credited officially as an "own goal".
CMU held a slim 9-7 lead in shots at the break, and both teams had seven shots after the intermission.
Central MIchigan's best chance in the second half came with 15 minutes left as Korte's free kick from 30 yards out bounced off the crossbar.
“As a former defender (played center for Creighton over the last two years), posting a clean sheet is a big deal,” said junior midfielder Emily Roll. “It means that we as a unit are doing our job and we take pride in that.”
Creighton remains at home for a pair of matches next weekend, beginning with Friday's 5:00 pm match against Omaha.
