Men's Tennis Completes Challenging, Season-Opening Road Trip

STILLWATER, Okla. — The Creighton men's tennis team opened its 2016 campaign with a pair of tough tests, going toe-to-toe with No. 28 Oklahoma State and UNLV in Stillwater, Okla.
In front of a home crowd, nationally-ranked Oklahoma State began its match versus Creighton with an impressive doubles showing, including a 6-1 victory by the ninth-ranked duo of Arjun Kadhe and Julian Cash.
However, the Bluejays (0-2) responded with a gritty collective showing in singles play, epitomized by Aaron Chalstrom's hard-fought, 3-6, 6-4, 2-10 setback.
"The guys competed well after some disappointing doubles that just got away from us," Creighton head coach Tom Lilly said. "It was a great environment and Oklahoma State had a terrific crowd, but our guys handled things well on the road against one of the best teams in the country."
The Cowboys (2-0), who won 17 matches a year ago, earned a 7-0 victory.
Creighton faced another tough test on Saturday versus UNLV.
The Rebels (1-1) clinched the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots. However, Creighton's tandem of Brooks Kendall and Harrison Lang held a 6-5 advantage at the No. 3 spot before UNLV secured the doubles point.
In singles play, Kendall earned a 7-5, first-set victory; however UNLV's Evaldo Neto came from behind to win in three sets to secure the Rebels' 7-0 match win.
"Our guys played hard, but all the credit goes to UNLV," Lilly said. "They have a strong team, and we need to be better at finishing points. We played two very good teams this weekend and I believe we will be a better team come next week."
Creighton will take on North Dakota in the Bluejays home opener on Friday, Jan. 22 at 12:30 p.m., at the Hanscom Tennis Courts in Omaha.
