Junior guard records 14 assists in the victory
NEWARK, N.J. -- Maurice Watson Jr. had a double-double with 13 points and 14 assists to lead Creighton men's basketball to an impressive 82-67 win at Seton Hall on Saturday afternoon at the Prudential Center. Watson's assist total was three shy of the school-record held by Ralph Bobik, and the most by any Bluejay since 1974.
Creighton improved to 12-5 with the win, and is 3-1 in BIG EAST play, while Seton Hall dropped to 12-4 (2-2 BIG EAST). Creighton is now 2-0 in BIG EAST road games for the second time in three seasons.
The teams traded eight leads in the first 10 minutes before Creighton called timeout after falling behind 22-17. Creighton answered with the next 12 points, a series that began with 3-point play by Isaiah Zierden, and three-pointers by Cole Huff and Zierden before culminating with an old-fashioned three-point play by Maurice Watson to take a 29-22 lead. Creighton's lead reached as large as 41-31 in the first half before it settled for a 41-33 halftime edge, with Watson leading the way with seven points and all eight of CU's assists.
Creighton scored on eight of its first nine possessions out of the half to quickly take a 56-38 lead as part of a stretch where CU made 13-of-14 shots. Highlighting that spurt was a rare seven-point possession. Zierden drained a corner three-pointer and was fouled. He converted the free-throw, during which SHU's Angel Delgado was charged with a contact technical foul. Zierden split two foul shots, and CU then fed Geoffrey Groselle inside for a score to make it 54-37 and bury the Pirates.
In addition to Watson's double-double (13 points, 14 assists), Groselle (20), Zierden (16) and Zach Hanson (10) all reached double-figures in the scoring column. Creighton shot 45.3 percent overall, and 66.7 percent at the line on the day.
Seton Hall was paced by 17 points by Khadeen Carrington.
Creighton returns to action on Tuesday when it hosts No. 8 Providence at 7:45 pm Central. A special 90-minute, fan-appreciation beverage promotion will be available to Creighton fans at CenturyLink Center Omaha on Tuesday before the Bluejays take on Providence. The promotion, available from 6:15-7:45 p.m. only, includes 12-ounce beers and soft drinks for $1.00 each in the Bud Light Zone area (north end of arena's main concourse).
