Watson has a double-double with 18 points & 10 assists
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- James Milliken hit a go-ahead three-pointer with 1:05 left and Maurice Watson Jr. had 18 points and 10 assists as Creighton won its third straight game with a 65-62 road win at Marquette on Saturday night before 15,844 at BMO Harris Bradley Center.
Creighton improved to 17-9 on the year and is alone in third place with an 8-5 BIG EAST record, while Marquette dropped to 16-10 and is 5-8 in league play.
The win was the 138th on the Creighton sideline for Greg McDermott, tying him with John J. "Red" McManus for third on the school's all-time wins list.
Creighton scored the game's first seven points, forcing Marquette into turnovers on four of the first five possessions. After the Golden Eagles scored the next five points, CU answered. Zach Hanson finished a lob from Maurice Watson Jr. before Cole Huff drained three-pointers on consecutive trips to make it 15-5. Marquette countered with a 12-0 run to take its first lead. The Golden Eagles lead by as much as 25-21 before CU scored the final two baskets of the first period to tie the score at 25-all heading to halftime.
Marquette used consecutive three-pointers to open up an early 31-26 lead in the second half, only to have Creighton answer with a 12-2 run of its own for a 38-33 margin. Toby Hegner bookended both sides of the run with three-pointers, while Geoffrey Groselle and James Milliken scored inside to combine for the other six points.
The teams continued to trade scores until a defensive stop led to a Traci Carter run-out and lay-up, giving MU the 58-55 lead with 3:50 left. But after the media timeout Hegner would come up big again, sinking his third trifiecta of the half to tie it.
Duane Wilson would give MU the 62-60 lead with 2:07 to play with a leaning bank shot. After a defensive stop, Creighton took the lead when Watson found Milliken from the top of the key. CU then got the defensive stop and had the ball with an eight second differential on the game and shot clocks.
Creighton would miss, but Groselle tipped the ball out to Isaiah Zierden, the league leader in free-throw percentage at 87.7 percent. He was fouled with 7.2 seconds left and made both. After a timeout, Marquette's Wilson missed a three-pointer in waning seconds as CU earned the road win.
Watson paced CU with 18 points and 10 assists, while Huff and Hegner each snared six rebounds. Creighton shot 41.7 percent for the game, including 7-of-25 from three-point range, and made 8-of-11 free throws. Creighton finished with 18 assists against just eight turnovers.
