DeLand, Fla. -- Led by five strong innings from sophomore Rollie Lacy and come clutch two-out hitting, the Creighton Baseball defeated Stetson 5-1 on Friday, Feb. 26.
The win was the Bluejays first of the 2016 season, lifting Creighton to 1-3. Stetson, meanwhile, fell to 3-3.
Creighton got rolling early in Florida as the Bluejays scored single runs in east of the first three innings, all via two-out RBI base hits. Junior Daniel Woodrow led off the game with a single through the left side, stole second and scampered home two outs later on an RBI single up the middle by senior Reagan Fowler.
The Bluejay run in the second didn't begin until two men were down as sophomore Keith Oren worked a walk, junior Kevin Connolly sent him to third on a single to center. Woodrow followed by smacking the clutch RBI base knock down the left field line.
Creighton's third run got a little help from the Hatters as Fowler reached on an error and scored on senior Brett Murray's double into left-center.
That was more than enough offense for the Bluejay pitching staff as sophomore Rollie Lacy (1-1) held Stetson to one run on six hits in five innings. Senior Connor Miller came on for three scoreless innings, then sophomore Ethan DeCaster and junior Sam Norman worked a hitless ninth.
The Bluejays final two runs came in the fifth and sixth. Junior Nicky Lopez opened the fifth frame with a double down the third base line, then came in on a sac fly by Fowler. Creighton's final run was brought in via another sac fly as Brett Murray led off the sixth with a triple to left-center, then senior Matt Gandy lofted a fly ball to center to bring Murray home.
Murray and Connolly paced the Bluejay offense with two hits each, while Fowler finished 1-for-3 with two RBI.
The Bluejays and Hatters continued the three-game series on Saturday at 2:30 pm (CT).
