DeLand, Fla. -- Junior David Gerber needed just six pitches to get the Bluejay Baseball team out of a bases loaded jam in the ninth inning as Creighton defeated Stetson 4-1 on Saturday, Feb. 27.
Creighton moved to 2-3 on the season with the win, while Stetson fell to 3-4.
Gerber came into the game with one out and the bases juiced in the ninth inning. Facing Stetson's catcher Austin Hale, Gerber induced a 6-4-3 double play ball to earn his first save of the season.
Three first inning singles gave the Hatters a 1-0 lead, but from that point on Creighton starter Matt Warren found his groove. The senior held the Hatters to just two hits over the next 4.1 innings as he moved to 1-1 on the season.
While Warren held the Stetson bats at bay, the Bluejay offense went to work in the fourth. Senior Reagan Fowler got things started for Creighton with a double to right. Fellow senior Harrison Crawford followed with an infield single past the Hatters' shortstop to put runners on the corners. One out later an throwing error allowed Matt Gandy to load the bags. Freshman Michael Emodi lofted a sac fly to right to plate Fowler, then Kevin Connolly gave Creighton a 2-1 lead with an RBI single to right-center.
The Bluejays added two more runs in the fifth as junior Nicky Lopez singled, moved to second on a groundout and scored via an RBI single from Fowler. With two men out in the frame, Gandy chased Fowler in on a single through the right side.
Stellar relief work made the 4-1 lead stand. Senior John Oltman retired all five men he faced to move the game to the eighth, where senior Nick Highberger retired the first four he went against. With one out in the ninth, Highberger surrendered back-to-back singles and a walk to set the stage for Gerber.
Fowler paced the Creighton offense with two hits, two runs scored and an RBI.
The Bluejays look to claim the series sweep of Stetson on Sunday, Feb. 28 at 12:00 pm.
