DeLand, Fla. -- The Creighton Baseball team came up with two runs in the top of the ninth to claim a 7-5 win over Stetson on Sunday, Feb. 28. The victory gave the Bluejays a sweep of the Hatters and six straight wins over Stetson.
With he win the Bluejays evened their record at 3-3 on the season, while Stetson fell to 3-5.
The Bluejays struck first in the opening frame as junior Daniel Woodrow beat out an infield single, stole second and scored on a two-out RBI from senior Harrison Crawford.
Stetson pulled even thanks to a long ball from Will Mackenzie in the second and the game remained 1-1 until the fifth frame.
In the fifth Creighton took advantage of a Stetson error and a hit batter to get the first two men on. With one down Woodrow reached on his second infield single of the contest to load the bags. Junior Nicky Lopez made the Hatters pay by slicing a three-run double into left-center. Senior Ryan Fitzgerald continued the Bluejays hit parade with an RBI single to make it 5-1.
Stetson got two runs back in the bottom half of the fifth, then took advantage of some uncharacteristic fielding blunders by the Bluejays to knot the game at 5-5 in the bottom of the eighth.
Unphased by the blip, the Creighton offense went back to work in ninth. Senior Will Bamesberger drew a leadoff walk to open the frame, then junior Kevin Connolly was hit by a pitch one out later to put runners at first and second. Brennan Hammer came through for the Bluejays with an RBI single, then Woodrow plated the final run of the contest via an RBI groundout.
Gerber sat the Hatters down in the ninth for his second save in as many days. Junior Sam Norman (1-0) nabbed the win, getting the final two outs of the eighth.
