Creighton will wrap up 2016 season on Sunday at 11 am.
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Softball team was eliminated from BIG EAST Tournament contention with a 9-1 loss to DePaul in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday. The victory clinches the regular-season title for DePaul (26-24, 15-3 BIG EAST), as well as the number one seed at next week's four-team conference tournament that it will host.
DePaul scored six times in the second inning on just three hits to build the only lead it would need. Micah Fitzgerald singled up the middle to drive in the first two runs of the game. With one out and the bases loaded, Morgan Maize hit an infield fly in front of the plate that led to an unusual situation. With home plate umpire Tom Topping signaling for the infield fly rule, the ball was dropped by Bluejay third baseman Jen Daro and deflected of her glove into foul territory. The runners then tried to advance, as they are free to do (by rule, the batter is out regardless of the catch/drop). Daro hurried her throw home, as it sailed wide and let a run score to make it 3-0.
CU starting pitcher Sydnee Eck (13-10) then walked the next two batters, forcing home a run, before giving way to Michal Hylton. Hylton would issue a free pass to the first two women she faced, plating two more, as DePaul's lead stretched to 6-0.
Creighton (25-21, 7-10 BIG EAST) scored once in the home half of the second inning when Tash Coffiel singled to drive home Allie Reinhart, but a baserunning mix-up left two players on third base to end the threat.
DePaul added one run in the fifth before a two-run pinch-hit homer by Kali Gardner in the sixth inning provided the final margin. The game ended after six innings due to softball's eight-run rule.
Coffiel had a pair of hits and CU's lone RBI in the contest, pushing her batting average to a team-high .364 in the process
Eight different DePaul players had at least one hit or one run. Megan Leyva (8-10) threw the first four innings to earn the DePaul win, while Maize threw the final two innings to close out the victory.
Creighton will close the regular-season on Sunday with an 11 a.m. game against DePaul. That game will be broadcast by the BIG EAST Digital Network. It will mark the final game for seniors Kelsey Allender, Erin McGonigal, Micaela Whitney, Blake Ringle, Katie Pascuzzi and Michelle Trulin.
