Creighton picked up one doubles and two singles victories
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell 5-2 to in-state foe Nebraska at the Dillon Tennis Center in Lincoln, Neb. on Thursday night.
The Bluejays are now 3-6, while the Huskers improved to 2-7.
Nebraska earned the doubles point with two of three victories and clinched the dual with four singles wins.
The Cornhuskers opened Thursday's action with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles. Creighton's No. 3 doubles team knotted the action with a 6-4 victory. Armando Gandini and Jake Glazer picked the win during the pair's first match as partners.
The doubles point went to Nebraska following a 6-4 decision at the No. 1 slot.
The home team extended the advantage to 3-0 with straight-sets victories at No. 1 and 3 singles.
Brooks Kendall closed the gap to one with a win at No. 4. The Creighton junior earned a 6-2, 6-2 victory to keep the overall dual within reach.
Moments after the conclusion of the No. 4 singles match, the Huskers won 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 to clinch the team victory.
Nebraska also claimed the No. 2 singles match, but the Bluejays ended the night with a three-set win at No. 6.
Mac Mease earned the second win during his freshman campaign with an 11-9 victory in a third-set tiebreaker. Mease picked up a 7-5 win in the first set, but dropped the second frame by the same margin to set up the 10-point tiebreaker to decide the match.
"Nebraska played well, and is always coached well," head coach Tom Lilly said. "They won the big points at No. 1 doubles which proved to be the difference in the doubles point. In singles we had some opportunities that slipped away and had too many deuce points go against us. Nebraska stepped up at the right times and beat us.
"Brooks, Mac and our No. 3 doubles did pick up good wins for us today."
Creighton is back on the courts next week for four matches in four days during its annual spring break trip to Florida. The Bluejays open play against John Carroll at 9 a.m. on Monday, March 6 in Lakeland, Fla.
