Men's Tennis Drops BIG EAST Match to Marquette 4-3

Creighton hosted its first match against a BIG EAST opponent since April 3, 2014
OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell 4-3 to Marquette on Sunday afternoon at the Hanscom Tennis Center in Omaha, Neb. Sunday's match marked the first BIG EAST home match for the Bluejays since April 3, 2014 against St. John's.
Creighton dropped to 8-9 overall and 0-2 in BIG EAST matches, while Marquette improved to 13-4 overall and 1-0 in league contests.
Marquette's tiebreaker victory at No. 1 singles clinched the overall dual. Creighton's Armando Gandini earned a 6-4 first-set victory before falling 6-1 in the second. The Golden Eagles' Alvaro Verdu claimed the match with a 7-6 deciding-set win to give Marquette its fourth point.
Creighton's Daniel Lopez-Rey and Alex Koca paired up for a 6-3 win at No. 3 doubles for the the Bluejays' lone doubles victory as Marquette took the first point of the day with 6-4 victories at each of the top two doubles spots.
Jake Glazer evened the overall match with a straight-sets victory at No. 6 singles, and picked up his 10th win of the season.
Marquette gained a 3-1 edge with wins at the No. 5 and No. 4 slots before Creighton countered with wins at No. 2 and 3.
Harrison Lang improved to 10-7 overall with a straight-sets victory (7-6, 6-2) at No. 2 singles, while Brooks Kendall won in three sets (6-3, 1-6, 6-4) at No. 3 to move his record to 10-4 during the 2017 season.
Lang's and Kendall's victories evened the match at 3-3, but the Golden Eagles handed Creighton its first loss since March 8 with their tiebreaker win at No. 1 singles.
"Our guys gave Marquette everything that they had, and we were in position to win," head coach Tom Lilly said. "It just came down to a few points in doubles and some of the singles matches. This will sting, but we know how strong Marquette is and we were right there with such a good program.
"Hopefully we will take this as a positive step that we can compete with the top of our conference."
Creighton returns to the courts April 11 in Kansas City, as the Bluejays will face UMKC at 1 p.m.
