Men's Tennis Opens Dual Season With Pair of Losses in Oklahoma

Bluejays fell 3-2 to Bryant, 4-0 to No. 18 Oklahoma
NORMAN, Okla. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell short in its opening two contests of 2018 against Bryant and No. 18 Oklahoma at the Headington Family Tennis Center in Norman, Oklahoma on Saturday. Creighton fell 3-2 to Bryant, and dropped a 4-0 decision to Oklahoma.
Due to time restrictions, the Bluejays and Bulldogs played three doubles and two singles matches, each best-of-three matches with 10-point tiebreakers in lieu of third sets. All five matches also counted one point each towards the overall match score.
The doubles team of Michael Koch and Daniel Lopez-Rey endured a tough opening defeat, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5), but Creighton tied the overall score with a 7-5, 6-3 sweep from the duo of Armando Gandini and Jose Oscar Diaz. The Bluejays closed out the doubles portion with a loss in the tiebreaker, 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 1-0 (10-4), at the top doubles position (Alex Koca and Mac Mease).
Creighton even the match during singles action with a victory from senior Brooks Kendall. Kendall's 6-3, 6-2 win tied the match at 2-2. Freshman Stratton Brown took his match all the way into a tiebreaker round, before being narrowly defeated 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8), and giving Bryant, the four-time defending Northeast Conference champions, a 3-2 dual victory.
"This was a very good college tennis match, and the format was exciting; playing all at the same time and all best of three sets," head coach Tom Lilly said. "Bryant played just a little better in the big moments than we did. We had our chances to win this one, so it will hurt that we didn't get the result, but I liked our fight and determination."
During the Bluejays' second match of the day, nationally-ranked Oklahoma protected their home facility with a 4-0 victory.
The Sooners swept doubles action, only losing one game. At the No. 2 spot, Kendall and Brown fell 6-0, and Lopez-Rey and Gandini fell 6-1 at No. 3. Mease and Koca's match went unfinished.
Oklahoma rode its success into singles play, winning three singles matches in straight-sets to clinch the dual victory. Koca fell 6-1, 6-2, at the No. 4 slot, Gandini fell 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 and Brown fell 6-1, 6-3 at the No. 2 position. Brooks Kendall (No. 1), Daniel Lopez-Rey (No. 5), and Jose Oscar Diaz (No. 6) all went unfinished during singles action.
Creighton will be back in action on the road in Lincoln, Nebraska to face the Cornhuskers on Jan. 20. The contest will begin at 5 p.m.
"Credit goes to Oklahoma as they are one of the best teams in the country," Lilly said. "We had some good moments, and we were competitive in several sets. Hopefully we will improve from playing that caliber of a team."
