Bluejays pick up one victory in doubles play, swept during singles
LINCOLN, Neb. -- The Creighton men's tennis team fell 7-0 against in-state rival Nebraska on Saturday night at the Dillon Tennis Center.
During doubles play, the Cornhuskers sealed a 6-1 victory at the top spot, but Creighton even the battle for the first point of the night with a win at No. 3 doubles. The duo of Daniel Lopez-Rey and Mac Mease claimed a 6-3 win over Nebraska's Micah Klousia and Chris Dean for the Bluejays' lone victory of the night. Nebraska took the doubles point with a 6-3 win at No. 2 doubles over Creighton's Armando Gandini and Jose Oscar Diaz.
The host Huskers earned five straight-sets singles victories and one three-set victory to blank the Bluejays. Nebraska's 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 3 slot clinched the overall match.
Mac Mease fell in a tiebreaker during the first frame at No. 6 singles before winning 6-2 in the second set. Nebraska's William Grattan Smith won the deciding third-set tiebreaker 10-5.
"Nebraska has a strong team and is very well coached," head coach Tom Lilly said. "We had our chances to win the doubles point and that would have been a big momentum builder for us. We need to work on the intangibles and have more variety at all positions."
Creighton is back in action on Feb. 1 against Nebraska-Omaha at 7 p.m.
