Creighton's 7-0 win against Sacred Heart helps continue good form in Orlando
ORLANDO, Fla. -- Creighton's strong form continued in Orlando, as the Bluejay men's tennis team swept Sacred Heart 7-0 late Tuesday afternoon to improve to 2-0 in the Sunshine State.
The win moved Creighton to 4-8 on the year with two more opportunities in Florida to continue their winning ways.
The Bluejays started off the day earning a doubles victory at the No. 3 position when Armando Gandini and Brooks Kendall grabbed a 6-2 victory. The duo of Mac Mease and Daniel Lopez-Rey clinched the doubles point for Creighton, collecting a 6-4 decision in what proved to be a decisive victory in doubles as Sacred Heart grabbed a win at the No. 1 spot.
Kendall (No.1) extended the Bluejay lead early in singles play, with the match being retired in the second set after winning the first set 6-2. Stratton Brown kept the Bluejays going in the win column after his 6-4, 6-1 decision at the No. 2 spot, before Creighton clinched the match behind a 7-5, 6-4 win at the No. 4 spot from Alex Koca. A narrow 7-6 first set from Gandini was followed by a more convincing 6-1 second set to earn a singles win at No. 3. Jose Oscar Diaz gave Creighton a 6-0 lead following his 6-1, 7-5 decision at No. 6 before LopezRey finished the sweep with a win at No. 5, 6-0, 6-4.
"We are finishing off sets and battling the elements well even if we are not playing our best at all times," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We are handling the change from indoors to outdoors quite well."
Creighton takes on Niagara University on Wednesday in its third of four matches this week in Orlando.
