Creighton held a 7-2 edge in shots on goal, but Grand Canyon scored the lone goal in the 81st minute
PHOENIX – The 20th-ranked Creighton men's soccer team fell 1-0 to Grand Canyon on Friday night at GCU Stadium in Phoenix.
The Bluejays fell to 1-1-1, while the Lopes improved to 2-0-0.
Grand Canyon converted the game-winning goal during the 81st minute. Creighton goalkeeper Paul Kruse went well off his line and attempted to head the ball away from the Bluejays' defensive zone, but the ball redirected towards the Lopes' Jamie Delor about 17 yards in front of the goal. Delor sent the ball into the back of an empty net with a bicycle kick to convert the first and only goal of the match.
Creighton ended the match with 17 shots, including a 7-2 edge in shots on goal, but Grand Canyon recorded saves on each of the targeted shots, including one team save.
During the 14th minute, Yudai Tashiro sent the first corner kick of the match towards the far post where Mitch LaGro headed the ball towards the middle of the goal, but a Grand Canyon defender kicked the ball away from the goal line as the ball slipped past the goalkeeper.
Kruse kept the score deadlocked at zero with his first save during the 28th minute. The Lopes' Josh Drack escaped past the Creighton defense and launched a shot from about 17 yards out, but Kruse calmly jumped straight into the air and deflected the ball over the goal.
Creighton allowed only one shot on goal during the first 45 minutes of play, while the Bluejays had three of their own.
Both Creighton and Grand Canyon had free kick chances from just outside the 18-yard box during the early stages of the second half. The Lopes sent one over the goal during the 52nd minute and another hit the cross bar in the 63rd. The Bluejays' Julius Fohr had an opportunity with a free kick about 25 yards out during the 72 minute, but his shot went well above the goal.
After allowing the goal during the 81st minute, Creighton's final shot of the match came during the 86th minute. Ziyad Fares sent a cross from the right side of the pitch towards the penalty spot where Tor Trosten one-touched the ball wide to the right of the goal.
Creighton returns to action on Monday with a match against South Florida in Tampa, Florida. Kickoff between the Bluejays and Bulls is scheduled for 6 p.m. Central.
