Men's Golf Finishes Fifth at BIG EAST Championship

Best finish at a league meet since 2012
OKATIE, S.C. -- The Creighton men's golf team finished fifth at the 2019 BIG EAST Championship presented by Jeep, its best finish at a league competition since 2012.
Creighton seniors Koy Potthoff and Brad Keyer led the Bluejays in the final meet of their college careers. Potthoff followed up back-to-back 75s with a final round 73 to place 12th, one spot better than classmate Keyer's 225 aggregate. Keyer, the first round leader after an even-par 72, shot a 75 on Saturday before closing with a 78 on Sunday. Potthoff and Keyer became just the second and third Bluejays to ever place in the top-15 individually at a BIG EAST Championship, joining Charlie Bolton's 10th place showing in 2017.
Sophomore Nate Vontz tied for 17th place, bookending a second round 77 with a pair of 75s. Vontz birdied three of his first six holes on Sunday.
Tucker Knaak tied for 31st in his first BIG EAST Championship. The freshman started his weekend with scores of 76 and 74 before closing with an 85. Knaak was even-par at the turn before turning in an atypical 49 on the back nine.
Rounding out the Bluejay contingent was Andrew McCormick in 40th place. The junior started the week with circuits of 84 and 81 before wrapping up the season with a 79.
Creighton, which finished ninth at last year's BIG EAST Championship, last had a top-five finish at a league meet when the 2011-12 team placed fourth in the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament. That team shot a 903 aggregate, one shot better than this year's 904 effort that was 16 shots better than any previous BIG EAST Championship performance in program history.
Knaak led Creighton on the season with a 75.8 scoring average, just ahead of Vontz (75.9). Creighton's team average of 303.1 shots per round was its best mark for an entire season by any team since 2007-08.
No. 43 Marquette shot a seven-under par 281 on Sunday to win the meet title by 24 shots with a 872 aggregate, beating DePaul by 24 strokes. Bradley and Seton Hall also leapfrogged the Bluejays, tying for third with an 899. Xavier's Garrett Wood birdied his final hole for Sunday 69, finishing the weekend with 216 strokes. That was one shot better than DePaul's Charlie Spencer-White, VIllanova's Mark Benevento, Butler's Patrick Allgeier and Marquette's Matt Murlick.
Nine teams and 45 competitors battled on the Callawassie Island course that measured 6,956 yards and was a par 72 layout.
