Bluejay team is -3 in Round 2 and even par in Round 3
IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Back-to-back rounds of par or better helped the Creighton men's golf team to a seventh place finish on Sunday at the Hawkeye Invitational.
Following an opening round 304, the Bluejays shot a three-under 285 in the second round, following by an even-par 288 on Sunday in the final round. The 285 was CU's best team score since Oct. 21, 2019, and tied for the program's sixth-best round since the fall of 2003. CU's overall +13 score was its best in any event since March 16-17, 2015, when it was 3-over par in three rounds at Jackrabbit Spring Invitational
Junior Nate Vontz led Creighton with a 3-under 213 following rounds of 72, 69 and 72. The Lincoln product has now shot par or better in 9-of-15 rounds this season, including four rounds in the 60s, and owns a team-best scoring average of 72.07.
Freshman Charlie Zielinski followed up a first round 77 with rounds of 72 and 70, his two best scores of the spring. He tied for 23rd place.
Sophomore Cade McCallum tied for 33rd place. After an opening 78 he improved to shoot 73 and 71. Freshman Jackson Thompson tied for 51st place with scores of 77, 71 and 79. For both men, their 71s tied their season-best rounds.
Rounding out the Bluejay contingent was freshman Jack Olson, who placed 66th. He followed up circuits of 80 and 84 on Saturday with a collegiate-best 75 on Sunday.
No. 43 Iowa won the event, besting a field of 12 teams with an 840 total that was good for 24-under and five shots better than Kansas. Hawkeye senior Alex Schaake, a Creighton Prep product, won medalist honors in the field of 66 golfers by two shots over teammate Mac McClear with a 12-under 204.
Finkbine Golf Course hosted the tournament, which had a 7,157 yard layout and played to a par of 72
