Red Storm scored a pair of second half goals
QUEENS, N.Y. -- The Creighton men's soccer team fell 2-0 against St. John's on Friday night at Belson Stadium in Queens, New York.
The Bluejays moved their record to 1-4-1 overall and 0-2-0 in BIG EAST play, while the Red Storm extended their winning streak to five matches and improved to 6-2-0 overall -- 2-0-0 during league play.
St. John's found the back of the net twice during the second half. The Red Storm converted after a turnover in the 70th minute and added a second goal during the 79th off a corner kick.
Both teams posted just one shot on goal during the first half, as St. John's led the overall shot tally, 6-4, during the first 45 minutes of action.Â
Following halftime, the Bluejays and Red Storm combined for a total of 16 shots, including 11 on frame.Â
Daniel Espeleta nearly gave Creighton a one-goal edge during the 58th minute, but the senior's attempt from 18 yards out towards the far post was saved. Espeleta ended the night with a team-high three shots, including two on goal.
The Bluejays went on the attack following the first St. John's goal, but Manu Toledano's shot went high after a corner kick just moments after the restart. Callum Watson also forced a Red Storm save during the 73rd minute.
St. John's flipped the field before creating a corner kick opportunity during the 79th minute, which resulted in an insurance goal.Â
Creighton attempted five shots and forced three saves over the final 10 minutes of the match but did not find the back of the net.
Bluejay goalkeeper Paul Kruse made five saves on night, as the Red Storm held a 14-12 advantage in shots, including 7-6 on goal.
Creighton was whistled for 21 fouls on Friday night, while the St. John's committed just 10.
Creighton returns to Omaha for a battle with crosstown foe UNO on Wednesday night at Morrison Stadium. Kickoff between the Bluejays and the Mavericks is scheduled for 7 p.m.
