Scouting Creighton (1-4-1)
Following a 2-0 loss on Friday at St. John's, the Bluejays return to Omaha for a pair of nonconference home matches.
Creighton is 1-2-1 in the month of September with its lone victory at #1 Indiana, 3-0.
Senior goalkeeper Paul Kruse leads the BIG EAST with 4.83 saves per match (29 in 6 contests).
Kruse made eight saves — one off his career-high — during the season opener (Aug. 26) against Tulsa before needing to make seven stops on Aug. 29 at Saint Louis. He also tallied five against the top-ranked Hoyas during the Bluejays' last home match on Sept. 18.
Freshman Manu Toledano and senior Diego Gutierrez each have two goals to lead Creighton, while Charles Auguste and Dominic Briggs have one goal a piece as the Bluejays own just six goals through six matches.
Briggs and Auguste each pace the team with two assists.
Gutierrez led the Bluejays last season with 16 points from five goals and six assists on his way to the BIG EAST Player of the Year award for the 2020 season (completed in spring of 2021). He was also tabbed the preseason BIG EAST Player of the Year for this season.
Head coach Johnny Torres is in his third year at the helm of the Bluejays after spending 12 years as an assistant coach.
Scouting UNO (2-3-1)
The Mavericks enter Wednesday's match with wins in their last two matches.
UNO earned a 1-0 win in overtime on Sept. 12 against CSUN for its first win of the season and claimed a 1-0 win on Sept. 20 against Midland.
The Mavs have scored just three goals this season but allowed only four through the first six contests of the season.
Malik Elmi paces the squad with two goals, while Ed Port has also found the back of the net.
Three different goalkeepers have at least one start this season. Senior Jeremy Pollard has allowed one goal during three starts, sophomore Lute Lilllo Portero owns a 1.50 goals against average in two starts (3 goals allowed) and freshman Nathanael Sallah earned the start against Midland and secured a shutout.
The Mavericks average 11.0 shots per match and limit the opposition to just 9.0 shots per contest.
Head coach Bob Warming is in his fourth season at the helm of UNO. He owns 481 career victories (44th year), including 190 during two different stints with Creighton.
Series History Against Mavericks
Creighton is 6-4-1 all-time against UNO, including 2-1-1 since 2016 as Division I opponents.
The Bluejays are 1-0-1 against the Mavericks at Morrison Stadium, which includes a 2-1 win in 2019.
UNO earned a 3-0 win last season at Caniglia Field.
Creighton-UNO Connections
Below are some of the connections between the Bluejays and Mavericks.
-Separated by just four miles, the Bluejays and Mavericks are the only Division I men's soccer programs in the state of Nebraska.
-UNO head coach Bob Warming is Creighton's all-time winningest coach with 190 victories.
-Creighton head coach Johnny Torres spent three seasons (2007-09) as an assistant coach for Bob Warming and played for Warming in 1994.
-Bluejay assistant coach Michael Gabb played for Warming from 2001-02.
-Maverick assistant coach Tim Bohnenkamp played at Creighton and for Warming from 2004-07.
-Creighton's Diego Gutierrez played 44 games (37 starts) with the Mavericks during three seasons before transferring to the Bluejays' program prior to the fall of 2020.
Scouting UIC (4-2-2)
The Flames enter the week with three consecutive shutout victories.
Younes Dayekh leads the UIC offensive attack with seven points from three goals and one assist, while Bukola Abdulwahab ranks second on the team with six points (two goals, two assists). Eight different players have scored at least one goal and nine individuals have at least one assist.
Andres Vasquez has started all eight matches this season as UIC's goalkeeper and owns a 0.83 goals against average, including five shutouts.
Head coach Sean Phillips is in his 12th season as head coach of the Flames and 17th year overall on UIC's staff.
Series History Against Flames
UIC leads the all-time series against Creighton, 2-1-0.
The Bluejays earned a 3-1 win during the last meeting between the two schools in 2014.
Saturday will mark the fourth time the two programs have met at Morrison Stadium.
Creighton Assistant Ian Sarachan's History at UIC
Bluejay assistant coach Ian Sarachan played for the Flames from 2006-09 and helped lead the team to three NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2007 Elite Eight.
Sarachan converted the game-winning goal in UIC's victory against Creighton at Morrison Stadium during the Sweet 16 of the 2007 NCAA Tournament.
Fortress Morrison
Creighton is 147-31-21 overall at Morrison Stadium (opened in 2003), which includes a 0-2-0 record this season and a 4-1-0 mark last season.
This season marks the first time Creighton has lost consecutive match at Morrison Stadium during the same season.
The Bluejays are 25-2-3 in their next home match following a home loss at Morrison, including a 0-1-0 mark this season.
The Bluejays are 65-16-8 at Morrison Stadium since the start of 2013 when the program joined the BIG EAST and 26-8-2 during home league matches.
Creighton has never lost more than three matches during the same season at Morrison -- previously in 2007 and 2019.
Creighton Soccer Going Green
Spearheaded by Creighton's women's soccer sophomore Emma Yackley, the Creighton men's and women's soccer programs will be hosting Green Games on Thursday, September 30th (women's vs. Marquette at 7:00 pm) and Saturday, October 2nd (men's vs. UIC at 7:00 pm).
Both matches will be carbon neutral and zero waste, meaning the electricity consumed at the games will be offset by credits purchased by a sponsor (FCC) and all concessions will be composted or recycled.
Bins will be set out to collect gently used athletic equipment and gear. These items will be donated to CUES, an organization representing three diverse, low-income Catholic elementary schools in Omaha.
Additionally, these games will be hosting a 'Green' Club Fair spread across the two events.
The goal of these games is to promote a sustainable culture at Creighton and within our community, as well as to educate attendees about environmental stewardship.
Scoring First Yields Success
The team who has scored first during 18 of the last 19 Creighton matches has proceeded to claim the victory (lone exception the 1-1 (2OT) tie against Ohio State on Sept. 6).
The Bluejays are 1-0 this season when scoring first and 0-4-1 when the opposition finds the back of the net first.
Creighton finished 6-0 in during the 2020 season when scoring first, but 0-6 when its opponent scored first.
Head coach Johnny Torres is 12-1-1 when scoring first during his tenure at Creighton, but just 3-16-2 when the opposition finds the back of the net first.
Additionally, the Bluejays are 1-0 when leading at the half this season, but 0-4-1 when trailing or tied at halftime.
Creighton's last come-from-behind victory came during the 2019 regular-season finale against Butler.
The Bluejays' last victory when trailing at the half was on Sept. 24, 2019 against Tulsa as Creighton fell behind 1-0 at the half before winning 4-3 in overtime.
Since Torres took over prior to the 2019 season, the Bluejays have just one win after trailing at halftime (1-8-2).
