Men's Soccer Plays Ohio State to 1-1 Draw During adidas/IU Credit Union Classic

Manu Toledano scored the Bluejays' lone goal during the 58th minute
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The Creighton men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw against Ohio State during a neutral site match on Monday evening in Bloomington, Indiana as part of the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic. The Buckeyes scored during the first half and the Bluejays found the back of the net during the second period, but neither team converted a golden goal during the two 10-minute overtime periods.
Creighton moved its season record to 1-2-1, while Ohio State also sent their record to 1-2-1.
Ohio State scored the first goal of the match during the 32nd minute. A cross from the left side of the pitch bounced around the center of the 18-yard box before Channing Chasten recovered the loose ball and found the back of the net.
Both teams tallied just three shots during the first half as the Buckeyes held a 1-0 advantage at the halftime break.Â
Freshman midfielder Jackson Castro recorded two of Creighton's three first-half shot attempts, both of which were saved by the Ohio State goalkeeper.
Creighton tied the match at 1-1 during the 58th minute. Dominic Briggs sent a pass from the right edge of the 18-yard box to the top of the penalty area towards Charles Auguste. Auguste chipped the ball towards the middle of the box where both an Ohio State defender and Manu Toledano each put a foot up before the ball found the back of the net. Toledano was credited with the goal for his second of the season.
Both teams totaled five shots a piece in the second half, but only Toledano's touch found the back of the net. Creighton's defense came up with a pair of blocks during the final moments of regulation before time expired and the match went into overtime.Â
Creighton controlled possession for the majority of the first overtime and outshot Ohio State, 3-0 in the first 10-minute overtime. Diego Gutierrez sent in a free kick towards the middle of the box from about 25 yards out towards the center of the box, but the ball bounced harmlessly out of bounds over the end line as time expired.Â
Callum Watson had a chance during the 109th minute for the game-winner, but his shot attempt on a free kick from nearly 30 yards out was saved.
Creighton ended the match with a 13-8 edge in shot attempts during the 110 minutes of action.
From the opening kick, both the Bluejays and Buckeyes attempted to use their physicality to gain an advantage. A combined 13 fouls were called and three yellow cards were issued during the first 45 minutes. A total of 28 fouls and nine yellow cards were whistled during the run of play on Monday.Â
Creighton heads back to Omaha after being on the road for nearly an entire week and will host Drake on Friday night for the Bluejays' ninth edition of Socctoberfest. Kickoff on Friday night is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Morrison Stadium.
