Creighton is off to best start in league play since 2004-05
Omaha, Neb. -- The Creighton women's basketball team improved to 5-0 in conference play for the first time since 2004-05 with a 62-45 victory over visiting Marquette on Friday, Jan. 7.
Creighton (10-3, 5-0 BIG EAST) matched last year's win total with the victory, while Marquette fell to 9-4 (2-2 BIG EAST).
Creighton led 13-11 after a first quarter that featured six lead changes and five ties. The Bluejay bench scored CU's final nine points of the quarter after senior Tatum Rembao opened the game with back-to-back lay-ups.
Creighton used a 10-2 run to end the second quarter to take a 27-23 lead into the intermission, paced by seven points in the quarter from sophomore Lauren Jensen. The Bluejays owned a 19-13 rebound edge at the break, led by five boards by sophomore Morgan Maly.
The Bluejay run extended into the third quarter as an 8-2 run to open the half pushed the Creighton lead into double-figures (35-25) for the first time after a Rembao steal and score. The burst continued through the timeout as Jensen drilled a three-pointer, then stole the inbounds pass for a lay-up to quickly extend the margin to 40-25. A corner three-ball from Jensen and lay-up by Mallory Brake saw the lead grow to 47-29, while a deep trey from Maly just before the buzzer moved the Bluejay lead to 50-33 after three quarters.
Creighton didn't let up in the fourth quarter, pushing the lead to 60-40 on a Maly lay-up with just over three minutes left. Carly Bachelor had six of her 10 points in the final frame.
Jensen led Creighton with 15 points while Maly (12) and Bachelor (10) also cracked double-figures. Rembao dished six of CU's 18 assists, which helped offset a season-high 18 turnovers. CU shot 46.3 percent from the floor, 35 percent from deep and 71.4 percent at the line.
Marquette was led by Jordan King's 14 points and five assists, but the Golden Eagles finished the game 0-for-3 from three-point range. Marquette shot 33.9 percent for the game, including 9-of-23 inside the paint and 11-of-36 from outside the paint.
Creighton is scheduled to return to action on Sunday at 12 pm (CT) when it visits No. 11 Connecticut (6-3, 1-0 BIG EAST). The Huskies have won 161 consecutive games against conference teams dating to March 12, 2013, but will be playing their first game since losing to Louisville on Dec. 19 after having its last four games canceled due to COVID-19.
