Scouting #11 Connecticut (6-3, 1-0 BIG EAST)
The holidays and a Covid pause has kept Connecticut off the court since December 19. The Huskies last game saw UConn fall to Louisville 69-64 at Mohegan Sun Arena.
After losing defending national player of the year Paige Bueckers in early December to injury, the last six months have been challenging. The Huskies have lost two of three, falling to Georgia Tech and Louisville.
The absence of Bueckers has afforded more opportunities for the remainder of the Huskies. Christyna Williams is leading the way with 13.8 ppg, while Evina Westbrook has 10.1 ppg.
One thing that hasn't changed is the presence of the Huskies defense. Despite playing some of the strongest competition in the country, Connecticut has limited opponents to 61.5 ppg. Over the past five games that number has dropped to 58.0 ppg.
Â
Scouting Creighton (10-3, 5-0 BE)
The Bluejays have gotten off to a hot start this season in part by Creighton's ability to be a chameleon. The Bluejays proven adept at winning in different ways, whether that be pounding the ball in the paint or connecting from long range. One key to Creighton's success is sharing the basketball, the Bluejays are averaging 19.5 assists per game to rank fifth in the NCAA.
A trio of sophomores lead the way for Creighton with Emma Ronsiek leading the way at 12.4 ppg. Just one step back is Morgan Maly (11.8 ppg) and Lauren Jensen (11.0 ppg). Junior Carly Bachelor comes in just below
double-figures at 9.9 ppg.
Defensively the Bluejays have been successful at gang rebounding and creating more pressure on the ball this season. The Bluejays are averaging 36.8 rebounds and 14.8 turnovers per contest.
Another particular of strength for Creighton this season has been its depth. The Bluejay bench has outscored the
opposing bench in 10 contests, building an edge of 144 points.
Keys To the Game on Sunday, Jan. 9
Players to Watch for Creighton
Tatum Rembao: The Bluejays' senior leader will need to limit turnovers and get her team going early. While scoring isn't essential for the Colorado native, her performance on Sunday will dictate Creighton's chances.
Connecticut Conference Win Streak Stands at 137
The Huskies have won 137 consecutive conference games against conference teams dating to March 4, 2013 at Notre Dame in 3 OT (96-87). Connecticut will be attempting to avoid consecutive losses for the first time since 1993 when it takes the floor.
Last Trip to Gampel Felt Like a Bar Fight
Creighton's last trip to Storrs reverberated throughout the Bluejays' 2020-21 season as three starters were injured in the game. During the course of the battle the Bluejays saw Mykel Parham sidelined with a concussion (missed two game), Carly Bachelor went down with a broken hand (missing two month) and Rachel Saunders was
sideline for the rest of the season with a knee injury.
Maly's Streak
Sophomore Morgan Maly has played in 35 games in her Creighton career, knocking down at least one three-pointer in her last 32 contests. She's connected from long range in 34 of 35 games, only failing to do so when she played six minutes at South Dakota State on November 30, 2020. Morgan did not attempt a shot in the game.
Zeroing Out an Opponents Calling Plan
The Bluejay defense held Marquette without a three-point field goal in the Bluejays' 62-45 win on Jan. 2. Under the guidance of Jim Flanery, the Bluejays have posted a goose egg in the opponents trifecta column 14 times. Creighton has complete the feat against Marquette twice, also holding the Golden Eagles without a trey during the 2010-11 season.

Keys To the Game on Sunday, Jan. 9
- Defend the Paint: Connecticut's starting five features a pair that stand 6-5, that height will force the Bluejays to defend as a group to prevent easy baskets.
- Three-Point Shooting: The length and talent level of the Huskies requires an opponent to connect from long range consistently. For the Bluejays that will mean moving the basketball and being shot ready.
- Embracing the Challenge: Last year Creighton's freshman group appeared slightly intimated by facing the Huskies in Storrs. Having played once in Gampel as well as facing Connecticut in Omaha, it will be imperative to get off to a good start.
