Shaun Campbell leads wire-to-wire
ELKHORN, Neb. -- The man they call "Biggie" won the Big O Classic at The Club at Indian Creek on Tuesday in Elkhorn, as Creighton junior Shaun Campbell completed a wire-to-wire victory for his first win as a collegian. The victory by Campbell helped Creighton place fifth among 14 teams at The Big O Classic.
Campbell had an eagle and four birdies in his first seven holes on Monday en route to a collegiate-low round of 66. The New Zealand native followed that with back-to-back rounds of even par (72) to hold off a field of 93 competitors. Anthony Ruthey battled back to tie Campbell, but his lone bogey of the day on his final hole of the tournament dropped the St. Thomas junior into second place.
Campbell's victory is Creighton's ninth individual title in a tournament featuring three or more teams and 20 or more golfers in the past 20 years, but first in any event with more than 61 contestants.
After seven birdies and an eagle among his 36 holes on Monday, Creighton's Cole Davis (70-70-79=219) had just one score in the red on Tuesday to tie for 16th place.
Tristan Nelko's (75-77-76=228) first tournament since transferring from Nebraska saw the senior tie for 61st place. Junior Charlie Zielinski (78-77-73=228) climbed 16 spots in the standings to a tie for 61st after a final round 73, and freshman Grant Feldman (75-79-78=232) tied for 71st place.
CU also had five individuals compete that did not factor into the team scoring, a quintet led by Owen Mackin's (72-74-77=223) tie for 30th place.
Both Jackson Thompson (72-76-76=224) and Cade McCallum (78-74-72) tied for 38th place after finishing 8-over par and Kolby Brown (73-80-78=231) tied for 68th place in his collegiate debut. Rounding out the Bluejay contingent was Jake Boor (77-78-81=236), who tied for 88th place.
St. Thomas (290-284-289=863) won the tournament by five shots over both SIU Edwardsville (293-281-294=868) and Omaha (287-289-292=868). Creighton (286-296-299=881) finished 18 shots behind St. Thomas in the race for the team title.
The tournament was held at The Club at Indian Creek in the Omaha suburb of Elkhorn on a Par 72 course that measured 7,498 yards.
The Bluejays close the fall season on Oct. 9-11 at the Carolina Cup in Spartanburg, S.C.
