Scouting Creighton (12-4-6)
The Bluejays have overcome a 1-0 deficit, scoring the game-winning goal in the 84th minute or later each time to claim three straight NCAA Tournament victories in 2022.
The winner in the 2-1 third-round victory at Tulsa was an 88th minute penalty converted by sophomore Giorgio Probo. Probo moved to 3-3 from the spot on the season and combined with the nation's top-scorer Duncan McGuire's seven, the Bluejays lead the nation with 10 PKs converted. Probo also assisted Mark O'Neill's tying goal by way of corner kick, his 13th assist on the year, good for best on the team and third best in the country.
In their six post-season games goalkeeper Paul Kruse and Creighton's defense have allowed no more than one goal in each contest, also keeping two shutouts in the BIG EAST tournament.
Scouting Duke (13-1-4)
Meeting the Bluejays elite offense is the nation's best defense. Protected by goalkeeper Eliot Hamill, #4 Duke leads the country in shutout percentage (.667). The Blue Devils have surrendered just eight goals in 18 games.
With Sunday's 1-0 victory over No. 10 FIU, Hamill leads the nation in shutouts (12) while leading the nation with a .444 goals-against average and is second in nation with a .882 save percentage.
Offensively the Blue Devils are led by sophomore Mohammed Shakur who headlines his team with 10 goals and 22 points.
Don't Call it a Comeback
Creighton is the first team since 2012 to win three straight NCAA tournament matches after trailing 1-0 in each match.
The Bluejays fell behind #23 Missouri State 1-0 in the opening round, then scored twice in the final eight minutes to post a 2-1 win.
Against #1 Washington, the Bluejays were down 1-0 in the 10th minute only to pull even ten minutes later. Creighton delivered a pair of goals in the final eight minutes for the second straight contest to earn a 3-1 win.
In the third round match Creighton trailed 1-0 to Tulsa at the half, yet earned the win in regulation with goals in the 54th and 88th minute.
The last team to pull off such dramatics was San Diego in 2012. The Toreros beat Cal State Northridge 2-1 in the first round, #6 UCLA 5-2 in the second round, and #11 Tulsa 2-1 in the Sweet 16 (just as the Bluejays did Saturday) after trailing 1-0 in each match. San Diego eventually fell to #3 Georgetown in the Elite Eight 3-1 after opening the contest with a 1-0 lead.
Last Team Standing for BIG EAST
Picked to finish third in the preseason, Creighton came from the sixth seed to win the BIG EAST Tournament in 2022. Riding the wave of success the Bluejays have outlasted the other two BIG EAST squads to earn a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament. Seton Hall fell to New Hampshire in the first round, while Georgetown went down to Tulsa in the second round.
O'Neill and Probo Claim Spot on National Team of the Week
Sophomores Mark O'Neill and Giorgio Probo both earned a spot on the College Soccer News Team of the Week on November 28. Probo delivered a goal and an assist in the Bluejays' 2-1 win at Tulsa on November 26, while O'Neill headed in a goal to knot the match in the 54th minute. Probo sent the ball to O'Neill on a Creighton corner, then scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 88th minute.
Eight is More Than Enough for the Bluejays
Proving the pair of goals in the final eight minutes against #23 Missouri State was no fluke, junior Duncan McGuire repeated the feat on his own to deliver an upset of #1 Washington in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Bluejays Have Been Elite 12 Times, Reaching Five College Cups
Creighton's match at Duke will be the Bluejays' 12th appearance in the NCAA Elite Eight. Entering Saturday's match the Bluejays are 5-6 in Elite Eight contests.
The other appearances came in 1996, 1998, 2000, 2002, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2014 and 2015.
The Bluejays advanced to the College Cup in 1996, 2000, 2002 2011 and 2012.
