Men's Golf Tops St. John's in Match Play

Bluejays win four matches and tie two others
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The Creighton men's golf team closed action at the BIG EAST Match Play Championship with a 4-0-2 victory over St. John's on Tuesday, Feb. 8. The event was held at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla.
The Bluejays picked up victories from Shaun Campbell, Jackson Thompson, Charlie Zielinski and Nate Vontz, while Owen Mackin and Cade McCallum both tied.
Campbell had to battle from behind to earn his 1 UP victory after being down two holes with five to play. The New Zealand product won the 14th, 16th and 17th holes to defeat St. John's Ryan Rittberger.
Thompson earned his first win of the spring with a 1 UP victory of his own, defeating Gage Wolfle. The Bluejay sophomore never trailed in the match and birdied the par-5 17th hole to take the lead for good.
Zielinski wrapped up a perfect week with a 2 UP win over Jack Simon. The CU sophomore birdied holes No. 3, 4 and 5 to move in front and never trailed again.
At the No. 1 singles position, Bluejay standout Nate Vontz defeated Peicheng Chen, 2 & 1. The CU senior lost the 13th and 14th holes to fall behind by a hole before winning each of the next three to clinch the match.
Mackin and McCallum both led after 17 holes but ended up tying their matches.
Creighton had opened its spring season on Monday with a 4-2 win over Sacred Heart before losing 4-1-1 to UConn in the afternoon.
Creighton returns to the course for the Advanced Golf Partners Collegiate in Greensboro, N.C., on Feb. 13-15.
