Scouting Nebraska (12-18, 4-5 Big Ten)
The Huskers struggled to an 0-3 weekend at home against Rutgers, falling 19-1 on Sunday. Yet coming off the last meeting with Creighton on March 29, Nebraska swept Ohio State in a three-game road series.
Nebraska enters the game on Tuesday hitting .243 as a team, led by Colby Gomes (.319) and Griffin Everitt (.292).
On the mound the Huskers have a team ERA of 5.27 with 251 strikeouts in 258 innings. Nebraska's pitching staff has allowed 267 hits and issued 120 walks.
Series History with Nebraska (50-92-2)
The Bluejays and Huskers met for the first time since 2019 earlier this season in Omaha on March 29. The last time the two squads faced each other in Lincoln was on April 9, 2019.
Creighton has taken the last three meetings and six of the last seven from the Huskers. The Bluejays, however, trail the overall series 50-92-2.
Cancellieri Claims BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, Wegner Earns Honor Roll
Creighton Baseball's Dominic Cancellieri was named as the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week on Monday, April 11 after taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning in the Bluejays 12-1 triumph over Georgetown on Saturday, April 9.
Cancellieri, a sophomore transfer from Notre Dame, lost his no-hit bid with two outs in the sixth inning to a Ubaldo Lopez single. The right hander finished the day to a standing ovation from the Charles Schwab Field crowd with a final line of one earned run surrendered on two hits and two walks with eight strikeouts in six innings of work.
Backed by a strong showing from the Bluejay offense Saturday, the start notched Cancellieri his third win of the season (3-1) with a 4.35 ERA across 39.1 innings of work in eight starts while holding opposing batters to a .220 average and striking out 39.
Cancellieri's eight punch outs tied his career best, a high he set in a similar outing on March 6 against St. Thomas as he surrendered no runs and just one hit through 5.1 innings of work in the win.
Junior Jared Wegner also claimed BIG EAST honors earning a spot on the BIG EAST Honor Roll for his performance at the plate across four games last week.
Across the four-game stretch Wegner batted a team-best .588 with nine RBI, slugging .941 and posting a .600 on-base percentage. The Bluejays home run leader launched his seventh and eighth homers of the season in the series sweep of Georgetown. Wegner kicked off his hot week with a valiant 4-for-5 effort in Tuesday's loss at Kansas State.
The Kearney native was also integral to the Bluejays BIG EAST opening sweep of Georgetown on the weekend, tallying two plus RBI in each of the three games, including four in Sunday's 14-2 blowout of the Hoyas.
Bluejays Post First Double-Digit Frame at Charles Schwab Field Omaha
Creighton moved into Charles Schwab Field Omaha (formerly TD Ameritrade Park Omaha) on April 19, 2011. Overall the Bluejays have played 238 games in the facility. On Sunday April 10 the Bluejays set the program high for runs in an inning with 10 runs in the seventh against Georgetown. The previous Creighton best mark was eight runs, done three times (April 1, 2022 against The Citadel in the 7th inning, March 30, 2019 against Illinois State in the 1st inning and May 1, 2011 against Bradley in the 7th inning). The facility record for one frame is 11 runs, scored by Florida against Miami on June 13, 2015 in the fourth inning of Game 2 of the CWS.
Unusual Seventh Marks First Time Since 2010 Bluejays Put Up Double Digits
The last time a Creighton offense plated at least 10 runs in an inning anywhere was opening day in 2010. The Bluejays scored 13 runs in the 7th inning of a 20-0 win over SIU-Edwardsville on Feb. 20.
What made Creighton's 10-inning rally all the more interesting was all of the damage came with two outs. Sophomore Nolan Clifford walked to open the inning, then was sacrificed to second in a 4-2 game.
Following a strikeout, sophomore Alan Roden smacked an RBI single to right. Including Roden, 11 consecutive Bluejays reached base before the inning came to a close.
Hess' First Collegiate Home Run Caps Six RBI Day
Entering the series finale with Georgetown on Sunday, April 10, sophomore Kyle Hess was hitting .203 with four extra base hits in 72 at-bats. Hess changed his fortunes with two swings, blasting a two-run double in the fourth and a grand slam in the seventh. It was the first grand slam of the season for Creighton, with the last coming from Parker Upton against St. John's last season on April 30. The last time a Bluejay closed a game with at least five RBI was
exactly one year before Hess did it as Alan Roden collected seven RBI against Villanova on April 10, 2021.
