Grant Feldman ties for second in the event
ELKHORN, Neb. -- Creighton men's golf had two of the top five teams at the Big O Classic, which concluded on Tuesday in Elkhorn. The Bluejays split their squad into an "A" and "B" team, with the top team tying for first place and the second squad earning a fifth place finish.
Omaha and Creighton both shot an 878 over the course of 54 holes, with Omaha winning the tiebreaker for the title thanks to having the best third round score (Omaha shot 287; Creighton shot 291).
The A team was led by sophomore Grant Feldman, who tied for second place with a 1-under 215 total after rounds of 72, 71 and 72. The Austin, Texas product earned his first collegiate top-10 finish and has now shot par or better in 5-of-9 rounds this fall. Feldman's 42 pars in the event tied for the most among all players. The only player in the 79-player field better than Feldman was Indian Hills CC's Gaspar Glaudas, who shot a 6-under 210 after rounds of 68, 74 and 68.
Senior Shaun Campbell also notched a top-10 finish, shooting loops of 70, 76 and 73 to tie for seventh place. It was his second top-10 finish of the fall and fourth of his CU career.
Freshman Owen Price shook off a first round 77 to bounce back with scores of 71 and 73 to tie for 16th place. His 71 matched his best round of the season.
Senior Charlie Zielinski endured circuits of 76 and 81 on Monday before bouncing back with a 73 on Tuesday to collect a tie for 43rd place in the field. His second round blip snapped an incredible streak of 85 straight rounds of 79 or better to open his college career.
Rounding out the A team was junior Cole Davis, who tied for 53rd after scores of 75, 76 and 82 for a 233 aggregate.
Creighton's B squad was led by a different player in each round and finished 10 shots out of first place with an 888 total.
Creighton Prep product Jake Boor earned his best finish as a Bluejay, as the junior tied for 13th place after rounds of 75, 72 and 73 for a 220 total. He had entered the week with a career-low of 75 in 18 collegiate rounds.
Junior Owen Mackin bookended CU's best round of the tournament, a second round 69, with scores of 76 and 77 to tie for 18th place. Mackin, who was playing in his first event of the fall, shot his first sub-70 round as a Bluejay on Monday afternoon.
Senior Jackson Thompson tied for 23rd place with scores of 72, 74 and 77 to earn his first top-25 finish in his past six events dating to the spring.
Freshman Brock Kuhlman had a birdie and eagle within his first five holes on Monday en route to a 74, then finished with scores of 75 and 77 to tie for 31st place.
Jake Kluver's first competition in two years saw the senior tie for 63rd place. The Norfolk native opened with an 84 before improving to shoot 78 on Monday afternoon and 74 on Tuesday. Including today's effort, three of his top five collegiate finishes have come in events held at The Club at Indian Creek.
The teams played the Blackbird-Grayhawk combination at The Club at Indian Creek, which measured a healthy 7,627 yards on its Par 72 layout. Tuesday featured several hours of delays due to rain and lightning in the Omaha area, which necessitated the withdrawal of Weber State. The Wildcats were in 11th at the time of the delay but had to depart early to catch their flight home, dropping WSU to 14th place.
Creighton closes its fall schedule on Oct. 10-11 with the South Dakota Invitational in Homer, Neb.
