Men's Golf Finishes Ninth in Spring Opener

Five Bluejays earn a top-40 finish
PALM CITY, Fla. -- Five Bluejays finished in the top-40 as the Creighton men's golf team opened its spring season with a ninth-place finish at the Advanced Golf Partners Collegiate on Tuesday in Palm City, Fla.
Shaun Campbell led Creighton with a tie for 33rd place after a 223 total. He followed his opening round 72 with scores of 74 and 77 and now owns a scoring average of 73.93 this season.
Four Bluejays were part of a tie for 39th place. Charlie Zielinski (77-76-71) and Grant Feldman (76-77-71) both closed with 1-under 71's, while Tristan Nelko (74-71-79) had a second-round 71 en route to his 224 total. Also finishing tied for 39th was Owen Mackin (72-75-77), who joined Jake Boor (79-77-82; T102nd place) as individuals.
Rounding out the Bluejay contingent was Jackson Thompson (73-76-78). His 227 aggregate earned him a share of 58th place.
Creighton placed ninth with an 889 total following loops of 295, 297 and 297 in a field that included five BIG EAST teams. DePaul placed third, Butler tied for fourth, UConn tied for 11th place and Villanova ended in 13th place. Drexel (293-287-283) won the team title by three shots over UNC Greensboro with an 863 aggregate.
The medalist honor went to UNCG's Nick Lyerly (71-64-69), who cruised to a seven-shot victory over Elon's Matt Doyle and Drexel's Drue Nicholas. Butler's Damon Dickey tied for sixth place with a 215 total to lead all BIG EAST participants.
The event was played at Hammock Creek Golf Club, which measured 7,169 yards on its Par 72 layout. The tournament featured 18 teams and 119 participants.
Creighton returns to the course at The Prestige at PGA West in Palm Springs, Calif., on Feb. 20-22.
