Men's Golf Lurking Around Leaderboard After Day Two of BIG EAST Championships

Charlie Zielinski is tied for fourth place
HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -- The Creighton men's golf team shot a 1-under 287, improving by eight shots, while moving into sole possession of sixth place at the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championships, Presented by JEEP.
The 287 team score tied for Creighton's second-best round of the season, one stroke behind the 286 shot on Oct. 3 in the opening round of the Big O Classic. Today also marks Creighton's best round at any conference championship event since the 2007 Bluejay squad fired a 283 in the second round of the Missouri Valley Conference Championships.
Junior Charlie Zielinski birdied four holes on the front nine and turned in a 2-under round of 70. Zielinski stands in a tie for fourth place with a 3-under total of 141 as the Omaha native looks to improve on last year's third-place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. He's just four shots out of the overall lead.
Jackson Thompson replaced Tristan Nelko in the Bluejay lineup on Saturday and promptly turned in a season-best 71. The junior authored five birdies on the day, including 12, 14 and 15.
Junior Shaun Campbell shot an even-par 72 to rise into a tie for 27th in the individual standings. The New Zealand native is now tied with Zielinski for the team-lead with 11 rounds of par or better this season.
Freshman Grant Feldman followed up Friday's 74 with a 75 on Saturday that included pars on the final seven holes. Tied with Feldman at 149 in 32nd place is sophomore Owen Mackin. Mackin parred his final 12 holes to shoot a 74, a one-shot improvement from the opening round.
St. John's Jack Simon shot a 4-under 68 while paired alongside Zielinski and holds a three-shot lead over teammate Ryan Rittberger (70-70) and Butler's Connor McNeeley (72-68) heading into Sunday. Marquette's Tyler Leach fired the round of the day, a 6-under 66, to help the Golden Eagles shoot 9-under 279 as a squad. As a result, Marquette leads defending champion Seton Hall by one shot heading into Sunday. The entire field is separated by just 17 shots, with everyone in the field chasing the league's automatic bid to NCAA Regionals.
The tournament field features 10 teams and 54 players have competed on the Par 72 Riverton Pointe Golf and Country Club, which measures 6,979 yards.
The final round of 54-hole event begins on Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. Central, with live video available at GKlive.tv.
