Bluejays improve to 7-2 on the season
OMAHA, Neb. -- Senior Kiana Schmitt tied her career-high with 16 kills to help the No. 16 Creighton Volleyball team to the MN Hospitality Omaha Challenge title with a 3-1 victory over previously unbeaten Iowa State at Baxter Arena.
Scores in CU's favor were 25-21, 25-19, 22-25, 26-24 as the Bluejays improved to 7-2 after earning their third tournament title in as many weekends. Iowa State dropped to 7-1 on the season.
With setter Kendra Wait (47 assists, 12 digs, 6 kills, 5 blocks) running the offense at a .255 clip, sophomore Ava Martin (17 kills), Schmitt (16 kills, .529%) and freshman Destiny Ndam-Simpson (11 kills) carried the Bluejay load offensively. Ellie Bolton owned a team-best 18 digs, just ahead of Sky McCune's season-best 14 digs. Martin chipped in a season-best 11 digs to earn the first double-double of the fall and second of her career.
Iowa State was paced by 12 kills from Maya Duckworth, while Brooke Stonestreet owned 27 digs.
Both teams sided out at greater than 64 percent in a tight first set. The Bluejays led 21-20 before Martin stepped up with kills in three of the next five points to help CU to a 25-21 victory. Martin owned six kills in the first set, while Wait added 12 assists and eight digs to limit ISU to .114 hitting. Stonestreet had 13 digs in the first frame to lead the Cyclones.
Creighton raced to a 6-2 lead to open the second set and never looked back, stretching its lead to as big as 15-8. An ISU service error gave Creighton a 2-0 lead at intermission. Creighton hit .367 and had 17 kills on 30 attacks as the Cyclones managed just four digs in the second stanza. Schmitt had five kills in seven swings while Wait distributed another 12 assists and added three kills of her own to pace the Bluejays.
Iowa State avoided a sweep by executing down the stretch in the third set. Nayeli Gonzalez served a 5-0 run to escape a 17-17 deadlock. CU saved a pair of set points before Duckworth's fifth kill of the set extended the match.
The contest seemed destined for a fifth set once ISU built leads of 19-13 and 22-17 in the fourth game before a huge Bluejay comeback. The CU rally started with a Cyclone service error, followed by a combo block by Wait and Schmitt. Down 23-20, kills from Schmitt and Martin, an ISU attack error and a combo block by Schmitt and Martin moved to CU match point with a 24-23 advantage. The Cyclones saved one match point before Schmitt's 16th kill gave it a second chance. the Jays converted this time as Remmes and Wait stuffed Gonzalez to clinch its fourth straight win over Iowa State.
Creighton owned a 61-50 edge in kills, a 66-63 dig advantage and led 9.0 - 7.5 in blocking while also outhitting ISU, .255 to .159. The Cyclones had a 5-1 lead in aces.
Creighton returns to the court on Friday at 5 p.m. when it meets defending Big South Conference champion High Point (6-3) in Minneapolis, Minn., to open play in the Diet Coke Classic.
